Whenever we consume more calories and food than we expend through exercise, this is known as a positive energy balance and a negative energy balance is when there are more calories and food being expended than being consumed and due to this everything from your metabolism, to your hormonal balance, to your mood is impacted. http://www.precisionnutrition.com/all-about-energy-balance
Energy balance is important as it indicates whether a person is going to put on weight, lose weight or stay the same weight. The energy in which we consume is converted into three main categories and they are work, storage and heat. The energy requirements in the body which includes the amount of energy required for maintenance at rest, physical activity and movement. Energy is also used for the process of digestion, absorption and transport. Energy balance is also more than just a change in weight; it also is related to what is happening in the cells which can affect metabolism and hormones.

Without energy all people would be useless not being able to do anything. Energy is needed to extract the oxygen from the areas in our bodies and diffuse it into our bloodstream. As warm blooded people we can only digest food and function if our bodies are at a certain temperature and have enough energy, and energy is required for this. We need energy to be able to move and use our muscles which also only operate when they are warm. Energy is the ability to do work in our bodies. That means doing everything that a body needs to do to stay alive and to grow: pumping ions across membranes, making new proteins, making new lipids, making hormones, making new cells, neural function, contracting muscles, replacing damaged components, absorbing nutrients, excreting wastes and pumping blood.…
