Participants interviewed claim to maintain regular sleep schedules with adult members getting 7 hours of hours of sleep each night, and children getting approximately 9 hours per night. Younger children still take daily naps to ensure emotional well-being. The mother denies the use of sleep aids, but the father does require their use at times. He travels often in his job and the frequent changes in physical location make it hard to get adequate sleep. This is an important goal for the age group in my care because not only does it set the foundation for lifelong healthy habits but it helps keep the other children, their families, and the staff from getting sick. I start by first helping them to understand the different aspects of good health and nutrition. I regularly remind the children to wash their hands before and after specific instances, such as before eating, after blowing their nose or using the bathroom, and explain why it is important and then make sure to model this personally. Another way I help prevent the spread of illness is by washing and sanitizing toys, dramatic play clothing, and cots on a regular basis. I assist with daily health checks to look for any signs of abuse or various cold symptoms in order to take any needed steps of action. I also routinely incorporate music and read related topical stories to reinforce their understanding of healthy choices and good nutrition. The child care setting where I work uses CACFP guidelines that promote nutrition through the mass use of fresh fruits and vegetables and I always encourage the children to try foods they don’t perceive they’ll…

Medical Needs/Care plans You will have to fit these into your care plans, so for instance if Child A has specific dietary requirements, such as allergy to lactose or gluten, change a cake baking session to one that is gluten/lactose free and this includes the child, ensuring their medical needs are being met and the children are still getting to be creative with baking. If Child A’s parents have requested that they do not nap at naptime due to not sleeping at night, you may have to include something within your planning to do with Child A at nap time whilst the other children are…

In this stage of one’s life, sleep is most important because teenagers bodies are still growing along with their minds. It is argued that changing the start time of school would be senseless because a later start would lead to a later, and the time required would still remain constant. Pediatrician Dr. Maida Chen at Seattle Children’s Hospital treats 90% of her teenage patients for chronic sleep loss attributed to high schools’ early start times (Reddy). Although most teenagers are not admitted into a hospital for their drowsiness, high school students do suffer from insufficient sleep. Because of the long hours spent finishing homework, participating in extracurricular activities and sports, and socializing with family and friends, the majority of students do not receive an adequate amount of sleep on a typical school night, causing them to be more stressed and less healthy. High schools should begin later in the morning to ensure that teenagers get adequate sleep, which consequently increases students’ health, focus, academic success, and happiness.…

Many people fall victim to sleep deprivation. Children are among millions of sleep-deprived American youngsters. According to the Journal of Experimental Psychology, (March 1975) we know that sleep deprivation impedes the learning process. The necessary amount of sleep for children in elementary school is not the standard 8 hours many people may think. Nine to ten hours per night is the ideal amount for them to be more productive during their school day. Like adults, they suffer when they don 't get enough sleep. They can 't concentrate on their schoolwork, they have trouble remembering things, they may become irritable and fidgety, and they may be vulnerable to colds and flu.…

In “Today’s Exhausted Superkids,” Frank Bruni believes children and teens are not getting the proper amount of sleep on a nightly basis. Today, adolescents between the ages of ten and nineteen are having to wake up early every morning expected to be focused, well rested, and ready to learn for school. The piles of homework given and countless hours of practice teenagers have afterschool causes their sleep schedule to be rocky and unstable at times. Stressful nights spent staying up late results in lack of sleep and concentration difficulties during class hours.…

The sleep patterns of adolescents (considered by society to be aged 12 to 20 years) significantly vary from those of other age groups; resulting in many parents of adolescents being under the perception that their son or daughter merely becomes “lazy” upon the onset of puberty.
