There are 406 schools: 302 primary, 76 secondary and 28 special schools. There are 23 community day nurseries, 167 nursery classes and 27 nursery schools; there are 24 children’s homes. We are corporate parent to over 2,000 children in care and there are 1,100 children on the child protection register.

National statistics suggest 25% of the child population will be vulnerable and require additional support and 8% will be children in need.

The Children Act 2004 makes new demands of local authorities’ support for children. A focus on outcomes for all children, and an expectation that progress depends on effective collaboration between agencies has passed from common aspiration to legal requirement. • Extended school provision - better co-ordination of services, targeted approaches responding to local need, including the voluntary sector.

• Young people services - increasing investment in targeted youth support to prevent anti-social or offending behaviour.

• Disabled children and young people services - investing in family based rather than residential support, offering more flexible packages of care to meet need.

• Looked after children services - prevention and early intervention to families at risk, enabling children wherever appropriate to remain within their families.

• After care services - reconfiguration of service including improved commissioning and procurement.

• Modernised work practices – creating a single view of the child database, single case record system, service redesign and culture change.
