CYP 3.1
Explain the sequence and rate of each aspect of development from birth- 19 years

Birth Development
Physical:
-Grasping at an object
- Rooting (turning their head ready to feed)
-Walking movements when lifted in the air
-Jumping (they become startled when scared or shocked)

Cognitive/Intellectual Development:
- Remembering and preferring the soft tone of the mother’s voice
-Remembering smells and tastes

Communication:
-Crying to get attention from the parent/carer
-Smiling to show happiness
-Giggling to show that they are amused

Social/Emotional/Behavioural:
-Crying to get attention
-Close to their parents/carer interact with people e.g. cuddles

1 Month Development:
Physical:
-The grasp reflex (grasping fades at about 4 months)
- Big toe curls and other toes fan out & fade at around 12months

Cognitive:
-Cries when hungry or feels uncomfortable
-Turns toward familiar sounds/voices
-Pays close attention to important people for example the parents/ careers
-Responds to sudden/loud noises
-Enjoys being talk to and try's to respond

Communication:
-Reflexive crying sounds to get across what they want or need. For example nappy changing or feeding so the parents know as the baby cannot communicate by direct use of speech.
-Make noises if hungry or uncomfortable

Social, emotional and behavioural:
-Begins to make eye contact
-High volume to begin to attract attention to themselves.
-To avoid falling they will hang on to an adult.

3 Month Development:
Physical:
-Learns to roll from side to back
-Lifting head and chest
-Raising head in ventral suspension
- Establishes head control. For example, following a person with their head and being able to look around

Cognitive:
-Taking an increasing interest in their surroundings and playthings
-Smiling in response to speech
-Focuses on high contrast patterns and faces
-Recognizes a few objects (For example a bottle or a rattle)
- Holds onto objects

Their development can be affected by a range of personal factors. Genetics have a great influence over a child’s development. Genes passed on from the parents to the child determine whether the child will have any inherited disorders. For example, Down syndrome can be inherited from either one or both parents. (www.nhs.uk) “Children with Down Syndrome have some degree of learning disability and delayed development.” Often children with Down syndrome have short arms and legs and low muscle tone, affecting physical development. Due to their condition, learning comes harder to the child and so intellectual development is affected. As shown in learning outcome 1.2 of this unit, all areas of development affect the rest. Due to the lack of progress at a rate which is normative for the physical and intellectual development, the child’s holistic development is affected.…
