How development is influenced by personal factors.

A child’s development will be influenced by many factors such as; environmental, genetics, parenting styles, religion, background, culture, income, health disability etc. Health: If a pupil suffers from a disability, impairment or poor health this could restrict their opportunities in development. For example a child with an impairment may not be able to participate in certain activities that other children can. This could affect physical development and also maybe social activities. It could also affect them emotionally especially if they are not aware of their needs and how much it can affect them. It is important for the teachers and other adults in the school to be aware of the affects that the pupils could have from these circumstances so that they can be supported and can be ensured that they will be included as much as possible.

Learning difficulties: A child who has learning difficulties can be affected in emotional/intellectual/social development depending on the child’s diagnosis. These children need to be encouraged to develop in areas to the best of their ability. The support practitioner should be given advice and guidelines from professionals on how to manage their needs.

How development is influenced by external factors.

Background and family environment: Environmental factors include; parenting styles, religion, background, culture, income, drug/alcohol abuse, community in which they live in, media (depending on age), experiences, access to play, opportunities to socially interact, stimulation, extra curricular activities, education and diet etc. Pupils will come from many different environments and cultures. There are situations that happen outside of school in the pupils family lives such as bereavement or break-ups. The school may not have been informed about these circumstances so they are not aware. These factors though can have a huge affect on the child and

    External factors can affect the child from birth onwards. These external factors are constantly experienced by children and young people. Living in poverty has a big impact on the development of children. The families will find these times very stressful and this can affect the mental health as well as the physical. Children who live in poverty often do not have the life experiences of others and may have a lack of opportunity to play and join in with their friends. This will affect their social and emotional development as well as their physical. It will affect their self-esteem and confidence and prevent them from fulfilling their full potential. The child’s family life and background will have an impact on development. If the parent or carer has issues themselves this may affect their parenting. The parent could have an alcohol or drug addiction and may not be able to care for their child properly and see that they do well at school they may be unclean and lack confidence and social skills. If a child is subjected to abuse this will severely affect their development maybe physically if they have been injured as a result of abuse or their social and emotional development maybe affected as they will lack confidence and self- esteem. As a child gets older they will begin to make their own choices in life and decisions that will affect their development. This could be as simple as saying no to alcohol, smoking or drugs, or at worst saying yes to these where they could become addicted which will affect their learning and damages brain cells and affects its development. It can also lead to mental health issues such as depression and a feeling of worthlessness. They can also make choices which have a positive effects on their development for example making sure they apply themselves to their school work and trying to achieve their full potential.     Children and young people have many different influences which affects their personal development. Their development can be affected by a range of personal factors. Genetics have a great influence over a child’s development. Genes passed on from the parents to the child determine whether the child will have any inherited disorders. For example, Down syndrome can be inherited from either one or both parents. (www.nhs.uk) “Children with Down Syndrome have some degree of learning disability and delayed development.” Often children with Down syndrome have short arms and legs and low muscle tone, affecting physical development.
