Commonwealth Games…
The insights – Intro: The Commonwealth Games Scam - Tuesday, 03.08.2010
The 2010 Commonwealth Games are the nineteenth Commonwealth Games, and the ninth to be held under that name. The Games are scheduled to be held in Delhi, India between 3 October and 14 October 2010. The games will be the largest multi-sport event conducted to date in Delhi and India generally, which has previously hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi. It will also be the first time the Commonwealth Games will be held in India and the second time the event has been held in Asia (after 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).

There is total mess and the arguments against India hosting the games by likes of Mani Shankar Aiyar notwithstanding, questions and doubts are being now raised whether the money has been well spent. The latest to jump in the controversy is the office of Chief Vigilance Commissioner. The CVC has alleged huge financial irregularities and poor quality of construction works in most games projects. The CVC is reported to have probed 16 CWG projects. Its report points out to use of sub-standard material, rigging of bids, sanctioning of projects which were not needed, favoritism in selection of contractors and private bidders being allowed to tamper with figures post-auction. The projects under the CVC scanner includes some of the major games projects including an elevated road from the Games Village to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. This project has been reportedly handed over to CBI for investigation.
The reports and the charges of scam apart, the fact remains that with just about 2 months to go for the games, every work now appears to be far behind the schedule and the country is running the risk of faltering at the execution stage. With barely weeks to go, the national capital is choking with uncleared debris, unfinished stadia, and other related infrastructure. Then

In the information presented by the Ivey School of Business, it is evident that many of the reasons behind the failure of Scott Hill’s Play On! street hockey tournament are rooted in the management and development errors along with some important outside factors. Reasons behind the failure of Play On! include Hill’s failure to fully understand the market and the business, his inability to maintain a positive cash flow, inadequate financing, poor management and planning. While Hill had a lot of passion for street hockey, he was not able to translate that drive and energy into profitable results. The most important reasons are his inadequate financial funding and his lack of forward vision and planning. As described in the reading, Hill did not…

North America is not alone. South Africa spent $1.3 billion on building and upgrading 10 soccer stadiums for the 2010 World Cup following on the heels of Germany’s 2.4 billion euro investment in stadiums and general infrastructure for the 2006 edition of the event. The Summer Olympic Games require the greatest financial commitment of all the mega-sports events with a typical spending around the neighborhood of $10 billion, but in some instances the sums have far surpassed that amount ( Preuss, 2004). China reportedly incurred costs in excess of $58 billion to host the event in 2008 (Upegui, 2008). Such sums of direct public investment to build infrastructure for private businesses or events are generally rare in other sectors of the economy. For this level of public investment, it is reasonable to ask the extent to which professional sports serve to promote local economic development.…

governmental organization of fifty-four independent member states. All but two (Mozambique and Rwanda) of these countries were formerly part of the British Empire. The CWG was initiated with the objective of being a sporting event that would bring together the members of the British Empire. The event was first proposed by Reverend Astley Cooper in 1891 when he wrote an article in The Times suggesting a "Pan-Britannic-Pan-Anglican Contest and Festival every four years as a means of increasing the goodwill and good understanding of the British Empire". The event was first held in the year 1930 under the title of the British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. „Bobby‟ Robinson, who was a major player within athletics in Canada at the time, was the driving force behind the event. The first Games included 400 athletes from 11 countries. To help cover the travelling costs for the visiting nations, the city of Hamilton provided $30,000. The success of the first Games at Hamilton in 1930 provided enough incentive to make them regular. Since 1930, they have taken place every four years except for 1942 and 1946, when they were disrupted due to World War II. The event was renamed British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954, the British Commonwealth Games in 1970, and gained its current title in 1978. Only six teams have attended every Commonwealth Games event: Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. From the first host city of Hamilton in Canada, the Games have been held in many of the major Commonwealth Countries. Canada again held the Games in Vancouver in 1954, Edmonton in 1978 and Victoria in 1994. Australia has also held…

Yes ladies and gentlemen, the fever, the ‘’gees’’, late nights, late mornings, bonding with the boss and finally only one race, the human race! It’s all over!! Seems like just yesterday when we were counting down 1000 days, when the whole world was in doubt that we’d never finish in time. But we did it!! I have never been so proud to be a South African. The stadiums were packed, fan fests were held, big screen spots opened and you could feel the spirit of “Ubuntu’’ all around you . But unfortunately after that we were back to square one again. Ofcorse COSATU is back on strike no surprise there, the teachers went back on strike and well we back to 5 human races again coming from being so united. But hey it brought in big bucks for everyone right... or did it?? Honestly I haven’t heard a single word on where most of that money went. After everyone took down their flags, put their bafana shirts far away and scraped off the stickers on their cars, everything kind of died... life just carried on like someone just sucked the colour out of a colouring book. Being the first African country to host the games you’d think there would still be a little excitement in the air that life would improve for everyone and that the world cup would certainly put South Africa on the map, or atleast give our economy a huge boost. Well things just didn’t turn out that way. I guess good things don’t last that long. Lerato…

Colgate Scam is the recent coal scandal that happened in the country due to poor allocation of coal blocks. This scam is also called the “Mother of all scams’. CAG report shows that private companies had gain around Rs 1.86 lakh crore from coal blocks that were allocated to them on nomination basis instead of competitive bidding, which amounted to the loss to national exchequer.194 coal blocks were not auctioned between 2004 and 2011 which causes these huge losses. The losses occurred in a way that the coal mined from the coal blocks given away for free could have been sold at a certain price in the market. Since the government gave away the blocks for free, it lost that opportunity. The government gave away 6282.5 million tonne of coal for free. It could have sold it at a price of Rs 295.41 per tonne. One important thing to be noted that while calculating this loss he CAG does not take into account the blocks given away free to government companies.…
