Analysis: For our first unknown, we observed the color and odor of the substance. The substance was a clumpy, white, crystal-like substance and it smells like new plastic. When we tested the solubility in water it resulted insoluble and in ethanol it resulted soluble. This substance could not be tested for electrical conductivity because the water was insoluble. We then tested for the PH value and it was neutral. The flame test was negative. There was no pigment in the flame.…

Lightsticks or glowsticks are used by trick-or-treaters, divers, campers, and for decoration and fun! A lightstick is a plastic tube with a glass vial inside of it. In order to activate a lightstick, you bend the plastic stick, which breaks the glass vial. This allows the chemicals that were inside the glass to mix with the chemicals in the plastic tube. Once these substances contact each other, a reaction starts taking place. The reaction releases light, causing the stick to glow!…

I learned a couple of key things about lab safety and procedure during this experiment. While working with the hot plates, I learned to pay a lot of attention to whether or not the hot plate was plugged in or turned on, as well as whether or not the wax was getting too hot. Measuring each substance into the cup was an important experience because it taught me to be deliberate and careful when measuring so as to not waste materials, making sure we did not have to start over. While this lab is a good starting point for reflecting the scientific process, I think we should have focused more on how each material influences the crayon. It seemed like we ended up making somewhat random mixtures and picking which crayon we thought was best without…

I’ve examined the existing research and have noted three suggestive treatments for alleviating jet lag: 1) doses of Vitamin B complex; 2) 10 minutes of meditation; and 3) 15 minutes of aerobic exercise. Each suggestive treatment is complete with a reasonable physiological rationale. I have come up with an experiment to test the 3 variables to figure out what treatments if any will work the best.…
