Curriculum Trained Peer Tutoring Scheme for Underachievers in Mathematics
The Problem and Its Setting
Introduction
Filipino students find mathematics a very complicated subject. Based from the result of Trend in International Mathematics and Science Studies (TIMSS) 2003, Philippines ranked 5th from the bottom, which shows that our students find mathematics a very difficult subject. Several reasons were given which cause the unsatisfactory results of the performance of our students in Mathematics, insufficient supply of textbooks, classroom and shortage of teachers. There are many studies which aim to find out and improve the performance of the students specifically in Mathematics. Result of the Division Achievement Test (DAT) in Makati for the school year 2008-2009, shows also that our students here in Tibagan High School have a very poor performance of the subject. With the ten highschool in Makati, our school ranked 7thon the recent conducted DAT. There were many reasons which I look into considerations. First, THS is just on its second year of operation, most parents feel that the school is not yet capable of providing a good quality of education which prompted them to enrol their children on well-known school. Second, most students enrolled are repeaters and dropped-out from other school, balik-aral and those that belong to the bottom of their elementary years. Third reasons were for financial and family constraint. And finally the environment in which they belong. Results from the different achievement tests given internationally such as TIMSS and locally (NAT, DAT) show that our students understanding of the different topics discussed in mathematics proved that they did not acquire the proper skills needed. In line with this alarming result, this paper is a reflection on the development of a strategy that will help students on their learning process and other teaching-learning practices that could help improve the achievement of our student in the subject.
