Senate Democrats drop reforms from an aid package set for Ukraine on Tuesday. The funds would have increased the Ukraine loan package while ratifying changes that only the United States has opposed. President Obama proposed those changes to European allies whom have agreed, but won’t be providing as much money as he proposed to the cause. “The governance changes would raise the borrowing limit of countries like Ukraine at the multilateral lending institution, while giving more authority to emerging economic heavyweights like China, Brazil — and Russia. The Obama administration painted them as vital to a Ukraine aid package, but Republicans were never convinced.” “But Republican leaders saw them more as a bargaining chip and were pressing to swap the changes for an agreement from the administration to delay final Internal Revenue Service regulations on political groups that conceal the name of their donors by incorporating as tax-exempt “social welfare” organizations.” Both these quotes represent two different viewpoints on this issue, one being other countries will take it for granted and emerge China, Brazil and Russia; but others view it as a distraction from taxes and the IRS.…

I read an article on Wall Street Journal about the Justice Department investigating the police force in Ferguson, Missouri. They suspect possible misconduct or discrimination against the 18-year-old, Michael Brown, who was shot by one of Ferguson’s Police officer, Darren Wilson. There is still question to whether the officer is charged or not. Ferguson and surrounding areas will be analyzed on their police training and policies. The Ferguson police force welcomes the investigation and analyzing so that they can improve in any way they need to serve the community better. Further investigation in this will help ease the Ferguson community and feel like they can trust their local police force. If there were not any more investigation, this would cause a lot of uneasiness upon the people of Ferguson. They expect thorough investigation to be done so that they know for sure what really happened and if the Ferguson police force is actually discriminating against the minorities in their community or not. The police force may be at fault for approaching situations the wrong way and coming off as discriminating with the community members.…

The Founding Fathers “would be horrified by the modern presidential campaign [process]” is the common thread that John Dickerson used when he wrote "How to Measure for a President" (Dickerson). The article explains the different injustices committed in today’s process of picking the leader of the free world as well as outlining the different things we can do as voters to improve the process so we can be assured that the man (or woman) we chose for the “job” is the best fit.…

This current event article is about the Supreme Court’s rule that allows people to give political campaigns money. The 5-4 ruling eliminated limits on how much money people can donate in total in one election season. However, the decision left intact the current $5,200 limit on how much an individual can give to any single candidate during a two-year election cycle. Until now, an individual donor could give up to $123,200 per cycle. The ruling means a wealthy liberal or conservative donor can give as much money as desired to federal election candidates across the country, as long as no candidate receives more than the $5,200 cap.…

Immigration laws are a commonly brought up, controversial subject among U.S officials. There are 4 seperate arguments from the supporting side, with the only question being what branch of the government should be in charge of them, and how. The first argument is that immigration dilutes or change existing languages, religions, cultural norms, etc. The second argument is that immigrants will flock to countries with generous social welfare programs, resulting in urban slums and flooded social networks. The third argument is that immigration can harm the country they come from if the departing immigrants are high-skilled in labor. The fourth argument is that that immigration lowers the income and job availability of domestic, low-skill workers.…

The background of the situation is essential to understand its full impact From the way Nigeria was colonized, it was clear from the start that it would bode ill for the future inhabitants of Nigeria. Beginning in the 19th century, the British started to make their presence felt along the coast. In earlier centuries, they had exported slaves from here and other places along West Africa, but this time they had a different goal. “European activities revolved around four major issues: exploration, Christianity, trade, and imperialism.” Consequently, all these were related, because one lead to the next. Therefore, in effect, all of these were roots of the problems to come. Gradually, in the 1850’s the British began to make their presence felt even more. Then, beginning in 1861, the British set up the policy of indirect rule. Using local chiefs and rulers, they were able to dramatically affect the way the nation was run. By 1905, virtually the entire country was under British rule. Despite the fact that they mostly ruled with indirect rule, they also set up some officials to govern the area, which the local chiefs obeyed.…
