Curfew Having the time of your life with your best friends, it’s just past dusk when suddenly you hear sirens. You’re not sure what you did wrong, yet the cops still pulled up to you and your friends, and now you’re in trouble. Apparently this thing called “curfew” is why the cops are taking you back to the station. Curfew started in the 1990’s when cities with rising crime rate with teen. Most curfew hours are in the evening and night. Curfew is a law that limits the hours that teenagers under a certain age can’t be out in public without a person 18 and older. Many people have a side when it comes to curfew, either they want curfew or they don’t. One reason having a curfew is a bad idea is the wrong people are affected. Families are out past curfew all the time and shouldn’t have to be scared. “Curfew sends the message that even families shouldn’t be out on the streets after a certain hour, which locals know isn’t the case,” (City Business staff) people shouldn’t have to feel unsafe walking the streets at night with their families. Older people around the age of 18 and up not affected by the curfew are the ones causing the problems. “The bigger problem is pick pocketing, street level drug sales, and if the city gets crowed, fights burst out. These types of incidents usually involve older individuals not affected by curfew,”(city business staff) so if teens aren’t the one causing the problem, why are teens the ones getting told go home when it’s older people causing the problems. In addition curfew shouldn’t be used is it gives police too much power. 2
According to Richard Cowen, “Curfew is giving police authority to arrest people who have committed no crime is ‘power without purpose’,” so when teens are out just walking around having fun, not doing anything
