Culture In Okewë Saluri Taraġ By Carmel Cauchi
Culture is a complex thought which has many sides to it. It is constantly changing, and with so many people in this world, there are endless amounts of cultures surrounding us. Communication is crucial as it is the means of human interaction, during which culture is created and shared amongst individuals.
Cultures come and go. Every country has their own culture, every city has its own culture. Every family has its own culture, and each individual on this earth has their own unique culture. This happens since people are always exposed to different cultures, helping society create their own culture. This means that there are endless amounts of cultures and everyone is affected by different cultures every day. Culture is what many hold on to and people strongly believe in, meaning that some may be close minded and will not accept other people’s different culture. The story “Żewġ saluri taraġ” by Carmel Cauchi, portrays different cultures which can be perceived between two men. The protagonist of this story is a Maltese famous book character, Mastru Gerfex. His name depicts that he is a clumsy and careless man. One might imagine that the people around him do not take him seriously as he is always up to no good. One might argue that this is childish play, for a mature man to call down an elderly man two flights of stairs to no purpose. The excuse Kaspru came up with, is that he had been gambling and lost all his money, and now he owes €1000. When reading the story, one may argue that the storyline is based in the 80s, for the reason that the names of the characters in the story have been worn out.
