I chose Northrop Grumman and PepsiCo to discuss the role of values and beliefs in their organization's culture.
What are the espoused values and beliefs of Northrop Grumman?
The values of and beliefs of Northrop Grumman are guided by providing quality products and services; dedication to customer satisfaction; effective leadership, integrity, maintaining the highest level of respect for coworkers, customers and suppliers and taking pride for your accomplishments and suppliers. Northrop Grumman also has five key behaviors for their employees. The expectations are that each employee lives by the company values; focus on operating excellence; work expeditiously; communicate openly and honestly; and make collaborative efforts across the company (Northrop Grumman, Our Vision, Values and Behaviors, 2012).
Use the worksheet on Figure 3.7 to assess the Web page. What does the web page reveal about the culture of this organization? Would this culture be conducive to effective project? 1. My preception of Northrop Grumman’s member Identity is the organization. Based on the values of Northtop Grumman, the employees are expected to live by the company values to make then a cohesive unit, all striving for the same success, which is “best in class”. 2. The team emphasis can be classified as a group because the vision and the company value imply that the company as a whole display excellence. 3. The management focus is the people performing quality work with integrity and focused on superior customer service. 4. The unit integration is interdependent. The company has a diverse culture of people from all backgrounds with different skill sets and experiences. This environment makes it easy for everyone to build on each others competencies to create the “best in class” quality products and servives 5. The control is tight because employees are expected to perform duties according to specifications with superb service and integrity. Northrop Grumman takes their code of ethics very seriously and expects suspcious behaviors to be reported immediately confidentially and/or anonymously. 6. The risk tolerance is high because Northrop Grumman is an innovative, technolgy leader. They are a “trusted provider of systems and technologies that ensure the security and freedom of our nation and its allies” ((Northrop Grumman, Our Vision, Values and Behaviors, 2012) 7. The reward criteria is based on performance. According to Wes Bush, Chairman, CEO and President, Northrop Grumman is “committed to establishing gold standard work environment, where all employees feel welcomed, challenged and rewarded for their contributions to the organization’s success. Only when we are successful in that pursuit can we meet our goals to achieve superior financial performance, delight our customers and reward our shareholders” ((Northrop Grumman, Message from our Chairman, CEO and President, 2012). 8. The conflict tolerance is high. Northrop Grumman stresses that open communication is especially important when the integrity of the company is compromised. They have established the Northrop Grumman OpenLine for employees to voice issues likeimproper time reporting, mischarging costs, missuse of company resources and/or information, accounting issues, conflicts of interest, customer or supplier issues, other ethical issues or export/import control compliance issues (Northrop Grumman Coporation, 2001) 9. My preception is that Northrop Grumman has a means orientation. The focus is on providing products and services that are "best in class". They deliver excellence, strive for continuous improvement and respond vigorously to change. Each employee is responsible for the quality of work ((Northrop Grumman, Our Vision, Values and Behaviors, 2012). 10.
