Cultural Geography In The News Report
Cultural Geography in the News In an article posted by the Washington Post, I found the title intriguing. The title reads, “Police killed the black ‘Miami zombie.’ So why did a terrifying, face-eating white teen live?” We live in a nation where it is not unusual to hear about racial violence on the news, radio broadcast, or online. While I cannot argue that there is a serious problem with our justice system, and how people of different races are treated, I think it is important to remember people are losing their lives due to drugs and violence that run rampant in our country. Other countries, such as Europe, do not have the same racial issues or tensions that America is currently facing; at least if they are they are, they do not as heavily

Dr. Brown’s article “Requiem for Trayvon Martin: When Will America Stop Destroying the Lives of Black Boys” moved me as I was thoroughly reading it. I felt a sense of anger and disbelief running through my mind without realizing till I finished. The anger came from the verdict of Trayvon Martin’s case against George Zimmerman. And the disbelief came from the fact that white people tried to justify George Zimmerman’s actions by stating that historically black men are violent creatures so you can never be “too careful”. The main argument of the article is that blacks are arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced more harshly than whites, for similar criminal offenses. It still amazes me how the skin color you are born with can ultimately define your life, lifestyle, or whether you deserve to die or not.…

"The verdict is in. The jury has spoken. The death of Diallo, a hard working African immigrant, was adjudged a terrible accident. Not murder, not manslaughter. Louima's assailant is in jail. Two of the officers who beat King went to prison. There have been commissions, investigations, demonstrations, public reaction, prater vigils, op-ed pieces, television segments, classroom dialogues. And so Americans ricochet from event to event, speaking of reasonable doubt and prosecutorial competence and ignoring the big picture, the real thing, the most important issue in this county that we try not to talk about. That is, race."(Anna Quindlen)…

In the SALON article, White Killers Go To Burger king: Race, Planned Parenthood and our diseased white privilege, Chauncey Devega writes about the sickening hypocrisy of how white perpetrators of mass killings are treated by law enforcement in the United States. Devaga uses examples such as how the Planned Parenthood shooter Robert Dear and the Charleston Church shooter Dylann Roof were treated by police as they were arrested. All of these mass murderers were apprehended by police alive and safe. Dylann Roof was even brought to burger King after his arrest. Devega contrasts this with the injustices that black Americans face on a daily basis. For a black American, even the most mundane interaction with a police officer can have deadly consequences.…

From all the discussions in class about racism and the different examples we have learned from, an article that really stood out to me was regarding the Trayvon Martin Case. I chose this specific article because it really outlines the aspect of racism in our country. Although America is based on the anthem “land of the free, and home of the brave”, some ethnic groups are not as “free” as others.…

In a video called “I Am Sean Bell”, directed by Stacey Muhammad, one of the men interviewed says “It’s unfortunate that it has to happen over and over again for people to actually feel something about it”. This video features young men featured in this documentary talk about how they feel about the incidents of the police shooting young men and what should be done to change the prejudice and stereotypes that surround young African American teens. The teens in the video feel like the police continually get away with taking the lives of young black men and there is no justice. This is a serious problem because these young men are being traumatized by the brutality of police officers…

The article “Trayvon Martin’s Legacy” by the Editorial Board of the New York Times (July 14, 2013) criticizes the case of George Zimmerman who was found not guilty for killing Trayvon Martin. The New York Times claims that this verdict is more related to racism, the Stand Your Ground law, and restricted of gun control. They specifically argue that this country is still afflicted by racism about which has been disappeared since long time ago, but in reality it is still there. According to editorial board, it has been such a terrible years for government to control the gun.…

Why are there so many Blacks in America being killed by the police worldwide, city to city state to state? Why is there more Black people incarcerated versus other races? These are just some of the question I ask myself every day; this paper came along in a time in this country where I do not understand why White America is any different than Black America. Why should I have to be cautious moving around as a Black Man in the “land of the free home of the brave”. Slavery ended many years ago, am I safe as an American citizen. Where I was born just like any and every color of this country.…

People of color do not feel safe when law enforcement is around, they feel as if they’re constantly being targeted. The perpetrator George Zimmerman, had the law enforcement on his side. Nationwide hundreds of people went against Zimmerman and the fact that he is a free man who gets to walk away with murder. The injustice and uncertainty that a family goes through after a loss of an innocent loved one is unfair, and should not be held accounted for. The victim now lost a life and leaves behind his family, with unanswered questions. After the death of Trayvon Martin, the million hoodie march occurred in Manhattan NY, in memory of the young unarmed teen. People stereotype individuals that look, dress and come from a certain ethnicity. Martin’s clothing at the time led Zimmerman into having suspicious thoughts because of the hoodie he was wearing and because the color of his skin. Millions of people marched in hoodies in the streets of Manhattan, to put an end into racial profiling. Racial profiling occurs because usually, people look for suspects who are dressed a particular way that might categorize them into crimimals. The ending result of this march was to find justice for Trayvon Martin (Staff, 2013). An innocent life was ended because of the color of his skin and wardrobe. Regardless of what society might do to find justice for an…

Racism has caused the reason why Trayvon Martin is dead today. Geraldo Rivera appeared on FOX News to explain his views on the whole Trayvon Martin case. In his words he said “I think the hoodie is much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was”. Many were hurt by his opinion because how is one to say that the reason why a 17 year old teenager, going home from a liquor store with skittles, dies because he was wearing a hoodie? I’m sure if it was a white teenager with a hoodie, that would be a whole different opinion for Geraldo. Many don’t begin to understand how racism starts and Geraldo saying what he did, is the reason why there is racial discrimination ,still, today.…

My first impression of the title alone was completely different from how I reacted after reading the article. When reading the article I was able to connect with some of the experiences the author described being that recently we are continually witnessing the increase of injustices towards the black society. It was disappointing that something as simple as someone walking by could induce so much negativity. The concept that the author was writing about focused on the negative influences of stereotyping. The strength of these influences is so strong that your perceptions and actions towards those stereotyped against are becoming instinctual, and are affecting their ability to live normal lives. Although many crimes do occur on a daily basis,…

Someone dies every day. Some believe that African American’s killing each other is hurting them as a whole. The killing each other is not a good view for if they want justice for their community. Some say every African American that gets in a similar situation will be looked at the wrong way because of the killings of each other and the violence we create. People do believe that at almost every confrontation there is a gun pulled, no matter the situation. The African American Community needs to change for them to be viewed as non-violent people before it is too…

    Criminal Justice Paper

This paper is regarding the issue of race in the media, as it relates to referencing various ethnic backgrounds throughout coverage of criminal stories. I am currently a student, studying Criminal Justice, which calls for many outside of the classroom encounters with the law, regarding research, reading, and simply keeping up with current events. The Washington Post, to me is my main source of information regarding local crime trends. Throughout my research, I have noticed a potential issue regarding the referencing of races, that could lead to future animosity (if there isn’t any already), and that could add to future misconceptions of specific race categories, that more than likely would be generalized to entire populations. There has been recently been a huge realization that many Americans associate specific races with specific crimes. Looking back to date, two major events have shocked many Americans, based on the actual race of apprehended suspects. The D.C. sniper incident and the Virginia Tech shootings are both incidents that really brought to light the issue of race and crime. In the case of the sniper, many assumed that from past situations mixed with stereotypes, that the snipers were white. In the case of the Virginia Tech shootings, no specific race was mentioned in the questioning of who committed such a heinous act, probably from the lesson learned in the sniper situation. Once the police verified who committed the acts, once again, there was shock, brought around the race of the sniper. No one suspected the killer to be Asian in the case of the Virginia Tech shootings.…
