Assignment 3: Cultural Event Report Smithsonian National Museum of American History
HUM 111 & Summer 2011
September 6, 2011
Professor Dr. Darryl Claybon
Strayer University, Online-Campus

Introduction
This assignment will detail my visit to one of my favorite museums in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian’s American History Museum. I have attended the museum several times in my life time and it never gets old. My recent visit I found that the museum is being renovated; they are among other things redoing the president’s wives inaugural dress exhibit, which I love. The day was peaceful and quiet, I like to go look at the pieces around the time tourist season is winding down; you can really enjoy the museum after the chaos of summer.

Assignment Three- Cultural Event Report
National Museum of American History I visited the American History Museum in Washington, D.C; by myself, I have visited this museum numerous times in my life. The museum has so many different exhibits starting with the best exhibit ever, which is closing October 10, 2011 for renovations they are combining two galleries or exhibits to combine the president’s wives inaugural gown’s exhibit and the accessories household goods and other white house objects into one exhibit; at any rate each time a new gown is added I go down to see it. The Ella Fitzgerald memorabilia in the Jazz Treasures Exhibit; is another favorite of mine. The museum is normally sprawling with people but since the summer was winding down and school for most children has begun the crowd was not that bad. At the height of the summer the exhibits are hard to maneuver because of the crowds. But, it is worth the waiting, they recently acquired a 9/11 Exhibit named “Remembrance and Reflection” that will run from September 3-11, 2011. Then there’s the Wizard of Oz Exhibit and all the popular culture memorabilia; such as Farrah Fawcett’s red swim suit she wore in her poster that is now a collector’s

The Lightner Museum in St. Augustine contains several exhibits that accurately reflect American culture in its Gilded Age. From stained glass windows to rusted railroad tracks, this brilliant museum offers a window into late 19th to early 20th century American lifestyle. Museums and their artifacts are often used as resources to ethnographic research, which is what our classroom attempted to do at Lightner. After looking into five objects of assorted dates and materials, we were able to make educated inferences, later backed up by additional research, about America’s Gilded Age and the people who collected these objects. The…

Colonial Williamsburg has many enthralling wonders that make it stand out as one of the best historical museums worldwide. Although the Magazine claims to be a very purposeful building, numerous amounts of other significant structures have their own captivating attributes that make them themselves. The Magazine still remains superior to other buildings, though, as its major roles thrive through the spirit of Williamsburg, and its informative description is kept in the minds of fascinated…

A blanket of snow has covered the ground, and the country side is dead and a stark contrast to our coastal, tidewater home. Already, as we travel up the James River, I am horribly cold and damp on the outside, but so full of energy and excitement inside for what awaits me over these coming weeks. Mr. Lee has told me that due to the growing strains with the Royal Governor, they have moved the Convention from our capital in Williamsburg to Richmond. Colonial George Washington has joined us on our trip. He is also a delegate. He is such a tall and distinguished gentleman and great hero of the recent war with the French and Indians. He shared with me his experiences during last year’s First Continental Congress. He told me about people at the Congress like Samuel Adams of Massachusetts and a fellow Virginian named Patrick Henry. I can’t wait to meet others along our journey. This is truly a chance of a…

When I first starting planning out the trip to down town to visit the museum I thought it would go actually the way I planned it. The plan was to wake up on Sunday make sure I wore enough layers of clothing because I am always cold; get on the train and go. Well it was a bit more complicated than that. I woke up later than I expected but still had fun waiting at the train station with my boyfriend. Also I did not wear proper shoes because when I started driving off it started raining, but my car is an endless closet so I found some shoes that were not going to soak through when I hit the first big puddle in Chicago. On the train ride I started calculating what I wanted to see and in what order, but I did not consider that my boyfriend would want to see something else and that we have different taste. This of course was a problem when we got there. So when we started walking down the couple of blocks that would get us to the museum from Union Station, I knew there would be bums, but they decided that Sunday was the best day to come out. On the way there we got asked by more than five bums if we could make a donation so that they can help the homeless shelters to support them. They especially liked the area right in front of the museum so it was hard not to make contact with them. However once inside I did not expect the museum to be so large because on the outside it honestly looked smaller. The lady at the front desk was nice enough to give us student discounts even though neither of us had our student IDs, and my boyfriend was finally happy that he can dry off his feet, unlike me he did not think about carrying around boots with him.…

A number of African Americans and Mexican Americans gradually migrated into the United States with the development of agriculture in the country. Although the reasons for their migration were different, the African Americans and Mexican Americans share similar situations as they tried to integrate into American society. The choice to migrate into the US was mainly attributed to their need to look for better opportunities, new lives, admiration and obstacles.…

The following essay is about my interviewee’s personal history and what he had experienced, being a residential in the United States of America. R. L. W. is a 69 years old man who bears his age well and who spent most of his life in his home country state Louisiana. He moved with his wife Brie and his daughter J. to California in 1987 in order to run his own business, a plumbing company. This step was very impressive he said, because the life is kind of different to the “redneck states” like Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Anyways he enjoys his retired life, living like me, in the Homesteads, an apartment complex located in Fullerton, California. He wrinkles his brow when he said that he used to have an own, bigger house. “The operation 2 years ago changed everything” he said, while he mourned and seemed to get meditative. He explained to me, that in 2010 his doctor told him that his kidney is not working well enough for a healthy body. These were very hard nights, he said. Luckily after a medical analysis, his wife came into consideration of being a donator for him. This step binds them even stronger together during their marriage, he said. “You need to image D., what this meant to me” he added, while he lent forward. I could truly share his feelings on that fact. Unfortunately this intervention in his life changed things. He needed to stop working, taking medicine and always keep paying attention on what he is drinking. “I loved to drink scotch, now it is nearly forbidden for me” he said and pointed on his lower body. He stopped his talking and we both kept silent for a moment. We were actually sitting in his living room, at Thursday the 19th of September and the clock showed 8:30pm. The circumstances of our meeting and talking where very randomly. If he would not have this urgent operation, he wouldn’t sell his big house and so he wouldn’t move to…

The exhibit I enjoyed the most was the display that shows Auschwitz- Burkenau, the largest concentration camp in Germany. This attracted me because it was sickening how many innocent lives were taken by the Nazi and how long it took to be taken down. Auschwitz had so much land and most the space was occupied by decaying bodies. Surrounding this exhibit was the clothes the prisoners would have to wear, and it brings tears to your eyes when you realized how worn out their bodies must have been that some victims could barely hold their back straight because their shirt was too heavy for them. It gave me an all new respect for these victims.…

It was my very first time in Malaysia and a failed intercultural communication occurred when I joined my college here. By someone in the International office at my college where I was informed that I will be required to get my medical check-up done together with other three students who were waiting in the student lounge for the person who was going to take all of us to the clinic. Whilst waiting with the other three students, one of the male students looked at me with a smile on his face and very lightly said; “Hi, my name is Christ.’’ He then stretched out his hand and I replied, “My name is Asiya, I’m from India and I’m sorry but I do not shake hands with male friends.’’ As I spoke, I could see his facial expression changing and I felt bad inside because I felt like I offended him because maybe from his cultural opinion that was an offence. After that exact incident, he never spoke to me again.…
