Afghan and Australian cultures differ from each other to quite an extent. They can be thought of as opposite sides of a coin which share no direct similarities or are in any way related. The Australian view of correct etiquette and decorum contrasts significantly with that of the Afghan society which is based and derived from their religion, Islam.…

A culturally competent educator will be culturally sensitive and aware. They will understand, recognise and respect the variety of cultures within the centre at which they work and ensure they cater and accommodate the service to these groups of people. Cultural competence also ensures policies and procedures cater to all people and does not exclude the rights and values of any group of people.…
Care planning is an important part of nursing care. It can be used for broad or individual goals within a community. This paper will discuss key components of a comprehensive cultural assessment and care planning. It will also provide a personal reflection from my nursing practice and state two appropriate nursing diagnoses. I will also discuss rationales, interventions, and evaluations of these nursing diagnoses. This care planning allows nurses to provide culturally congruent care for diverse patients.…

As stated by Karen Kearns (2014, p. 367) “Cultural competence is the ability to understand communicate with and effectively, interact with people across cultures. Cultural competence can be embodied in policies and procedures that seek to ensure that cultural diversity is respected and embraced by all members of an organisation.” Cultural competence can also refer to relationships that are made across cultures whether it be as an individual or as a group. Also an individual or groups attitude across the different cultures. Cultural competence to an educator means to be understanding and communicate with families and children, keeping in mind your values, beliefs and attitudes because cultural competence is to act, behave and communicate on…
Upon arriving at I decided that I would continue kissing people’s cheeks when greeting them and figured that they would eventually start doing so too. I was wrong. As they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. My unwillingness to yield to this foreign culture led to many awkward kisses, judging stares, and weird looks. Although I did feel weird after countless failed “kissing” attempts, my failures taught me that when in a foreign country, respecting mannerisms and habits is crucial in order to adapt and function well in that society.…
Cultural sensitivity is vital to remember when any firm does any business in a foreign market. Certain strategies and procedures used in the United States may not translate the same way in other countries or have the same impact. Other areas in the world operate their businesses with different priorities and in different cultures so it is crucial to consider how these differences may affect how business is done. Ethical situations will inevitably arise when a firm begins operations in a new international market so it is best to be prepared to face such situations with character.…

I never realized how experiencing a different culture would impact my life for the good. Experiencing a different culture made me aware of how lucky I am to live in the United states, how people can come together in times of need, how loving and caring people who are less fortunate than me can be, and how truly blessed I am to live in a safe environment. I am so blessed to have been given the opportunity to go to Guatemala on a church mission trip. That week of my life changed me forever.…
Cultural norm - “The term 'culture' refers to attitudes and patterns of behavior in a given group. 'Norm' refers to attitudes and behaviors that are considered normal, typical or average within that group.” (“Cultural norms: Definition & values - video & lesson transcript,” 2003) After watching Ted speeches, I was shocked as to why I haven't watched Ted Talks yet ! Listening to the different cultural norms, and stereotyping these women went through was interesting; and very much true as I was brought up in a traditional Indian family with traditional values even though I was born and raised in Canada. All societies have cultural norms; these norms influence every aspect of our life and how we perceive things and we are usually unaware that…
Each family confronts death and funerals in a different manner. Some families follow long held traditions, while others seem to have no such precedent to serve as a guide. At first consideration, I thought it would be nearly impossible to write an essay on death and funerals in my family, because I don’t have much in the way of personal involvement to draw upon. After contemplating this absence of experience, I came to the realization that the lack of the presence of death and funerals in my family is itself, a statement about the social and cultural influences that have produced such a result. In the remainder of this essay, I will discuss the specific influences on how…

Last week, I was in the grocery store and I happened to notice an interesting interaction going on between people of different cultures. They were an associate of the store and two customers. The associate was a young girl who looked like a Native American while the other two were old Asian couple who had problems interacting in English. The couple seemed to be looking for some sort of coffee and they asked the associate for the location of coffee. The associate asked them if they were looking for coffee grains or prepared coffee. The couple, not understanding what she said, kept on repeating the word coffee. The associate walked them to the aisle where coffee was located. They shook their heads and said ‘No, no’. Hence, the girl took them to the coffee machine and yet, again, the couple discussed about something in their own language and shook their heads. The girl did not try to enquire further as she could not interpret what they were saying. It seemed that the couple could not find what they were looking for, so they sadly left the store.…
