Cultural Diversity

I was walking down the street the other day when I stopped and took a hard look at all the different people, businesses, and cultures that surrounded me. My first thought was "wow, we really live in a world that is held together by a wide variety of ethnic groups." Without all the different cultures and influences that I have experienced, I would not be the person I am today. Ethnicity plays an amazing role in whom we are today; from how we are treated and how we are raised, all plays into account when we take a look at different ethnic groups. This paper touches upon that very fact.
Demographics
I live in a State that has many different cities. Several of the cities stick out in my mind when I think about racial influences and the different ethnic groups. Denver, where I live, is influenced by one particular race. According to the US census in 2000, 24,722 people live in Denver; of that number, 23,138 are white, 1,697 are Hispanic American, 143 are African American, 104 are Native American, 448 are Asian-American and 429 are from other types of races. However, I work and spend the majority of my time in Denver. According to the USS census in 2000, 554,336 people live in Denver. 65% of people are white, 31% are Hispanic, 11% are African-American and 15% make up other types of ethnic groups. With such a large variety of ethnic groups it is easy to become influenced by all of the different cultures. In the 5 points community there is not unity among the ethnic groups. There is hatred and fear. This may not be true for everyone, or every group but that is what I have seen. Certain parts of towns are primarily white; the same is true for African Americans and Hispanics. Neighborhoods have unwritten guide lines for the types of people can move in. Now, none of this information is written down, this has all just been witnessed. East Denver is

Culture as it is defined by (Henslin, 2010) encompasses all that we are culturally, ethnically, and linguistically—“the language, beliefs, values, norms, behaviors, and even material objects that characterizes a group and are passed from one generation to the next.” However, we are not so totally encapsulated culturally that we cannot reach beyond the familiar and dare to explore and appreciated the “minor differences” of others.…

The cultural makeup of my community is not very diverse at all. According to the 2000 Census the cultural make up of my community was primarily white, at 95.9%. The remaining 3.1% of residents was made up of multiple ethnic groups. At the time of the 2000 Census the Aryan Nation still had a very large presence my community. Today, my community is a little more diverse than it was in 2000; however it is still primarily a white community. It will be very interesting to see the results of the 2010 Census to see how my community has grown in its cultural diversity.…

The United States of America, since its commencement, has been a “melting pot” of different nationalities. While the term melting pot sounds forthcoming, this is not the case in reality. Many times cultures collide due their differences in ideology, culture, and geographical proximity. Such culture clashes have marked the history of the United States. Race is usually thought of in the physical sense with difference in skin color, hair, facial features, and language. Although race usually follows along physical lines, it is much more far reaching and extends into the social and cultural beliefs. In the past, the dominant trend was to keep these beliefs separate, consequently increasing the feeling of racial unity and racism in society. History has shown us that man has used segregation as a method of not only keeping the peace, but also of keeping the purity of a race in tact.…

I was born in New York City in 2002. In the next year, in 2003, my family moved to Upper Montclair. We moved to a neighborhood that at the time was nearly all white. In 2007, we moved down our street from the first house on the block, to the last. The family who we sold that house to was a black family. They still live there this very day, and my family is good friends with them. We spend every Christmas Eve with them every year. Ever since they joined the neighborhood, it has gotten increasingly more diverse. Now, we have Asian families, Jewish families, more black families, and Indian families. I feel that my street (Inwood Avenue) somewhat represents Montclair’s ethnic makeup. It’s very diverse, and we are all very accepting of each other’s culture and beliefs. I feel that the diverse town…

"Diversity" has become one of the most often used words of our time-- and a word almost never defined. Diversity is invoked in discussions of everything from employment policy to curriculum reform and from entertainment to politics. Nor is the word merely a description of the long-known fact that the American population is made up of people from many countries, many races, and many cultural backgrounds. All that was well known long before the word "diversity" became an insistent part of our vocabulary, an invocation, an imperative, or a bludgeon in ideological conflicts.…

Within the last four decades there has been an increase of immigration of Latin Americans and Asians in which fifty one percent are Latin American born and twenty five percent are Asian born (Ha, 2010). These percent are mainly towards the west coast since Asian countries and Latin America are closer to that region of the United States. Within most metropolitan areas there has been an increase in segregation between Hispanics and Latin Americans (Ha, 2010). There has been research done where racial tension goes down neighborhoods that are mixed racially and ethnically because of interaction and cooperation between each other (Ha, 2010). Scholars have noticed that when there is a sizeable population of the minorities there is a greater opportunity for contact between minority and majority groups (Ha, 2010). Racial tensions are different in multiples levels of geographic, for example in counties and metropolitan areas there is more of a push for jobs, resources, and local politics (Ha, 2010). Racial tension between different races from immigration might not be too bad since it creates competition for power (Ha,…

I have wondered what it would be like if everyone in my community was the exactly the same as the next person. When I think about this I wonder how it would be different if we were all exactly the same race, from the same cultural background and the same ethnicity. Throughout my local community, Henderson, Nevada, many differences can be seen and I am thankful for that. The cultural differences and many races and ethnicities make this community what it is. Henderson is second largest city in Nevada with over a quarter of a million inhabitants, second only to Las Vegas, Nevada. Henderson’s population is made up of four different races making the total 267,270 people. There are over 210,000 Caucasians, over 15,000 African Americans and more than 35,000 Hispanics. As in many US cities, the gender balance is fairly even at 49.1% male and 50.9 % female community members. (cityofhenderson.com)…
