Cultural Diversity
Cultural Diversity

There are some many different types of cultural diversity in today’s world. With the many different cultures and the many different races there are so many different cultures that are over looked or misunderstood. Cultural diversity is the cultural variety and cultural differences that exist in the world, a society, or an institution. For many kids they will never get the opportunity to be able to learn about the many cultures, this in return keeps them from completely understanding their many classmates as well as they grow up understanding their coworkers. The government and the school districts have made it difficult for kids to be able to learn about different religions and different cultures. It seems more that the school district want nothing to do with culture as they are afraid of making a parent angry since so many parents seem to have a fit anytime religion is brought up in school. An example is my kids are mixed race and their religion is Muslim but most people do not understand their religion and associate it with terrorism when in fact there are so many Muslims in America who are great people. In order to help kids to be able to understand the many different cultures in a class I would try an incorporate different cultures into their learning. Each month could be to learn about a different culture and be able to build a culture board where the class will learn about a culture such as their way of dress, the different foods they eat, and the different types of celebrations they have. By teaching kids about different cultures at an early age will allow them to be able to understand their classmates and when they move on the adulthood they will be able to have more of a connection with their peers and coworkers.

Currently I live in a community of approximately 21,785 people according to the 2010 US Census. Herriman, which is about 20 miles southwest of Salt Lake City has grown by leaps and bounds over the last twelve years. Herriman was founded as a farming community in 1849 and was incorporated in 1999. Herriman still feels like a small town, an idea which is held onto by its community leaders and population. I noticed while in researching the varying statistics for my city that I look like about 90% of the population. At 38, I am a little bit older than the average age of 27, but I am Caucasian, as are the majority of the residents. I noted with interest, during our last mayoral race, the current mayor spent the time to go out and knock on doors introducing himself to everyone. He made a significant impact on me as he stood and visited with my family and seemed to have the same values and ideals that I do. I cannot say that I have noticed a large difference in how minorities are treated by members of my community. In fact, in my local neighborhood we have a few families of varying ethnicities which have been welcomed and encouraged to teach about their homelands. It has been fascinating to watch and learn about the cultures from which they came and even to try some of the more traditional foods.…

Being a military brat I was raised around all different kinds of race, religion, cultures, and so on. I know what it is like to be that one with different views and values. Relating to students is really important to me because I want them to always feel safe and comfortable in my classroom. Multicultural education is education that teaches the value of cultural diversity (Slavin, 2012). There are five dimensions that fall under multicultural education, which are content integration, knowledge construction, prejudice reduction, empowering school culture. These five dimensions are different strategies to implement diversity in the classroom, and using culture examples in our content area. I have learned many things through the five dimensions of multicultural education and will implement it in my classroom. In one of my journal entries I stated “I am really glad that I read up on this and now I can bring this to the table at our first meeting on Thursday “(entry 3). Reading all of this information I was able to bring information to our group meeting, and everyone was very grateful for the information. We have been working on a plan to implement throughout all of the classes, in our “6th Grade…

With me becoming a first time teacher I believe that it is extremely important to be open to new cultures. I want my classroom to be a place students feel welcomed and where they want to share about their own backgrounds with others. There are a couple ways I believe I could achieve these goals. One is by bringing in elements from other races, another could be information books or stories about other cultures, and lastly the most important is to have lots of knowledge on other cultures than my own. Having a diverse classroom would be much easier to learn about different races and cultures. But, living in a small town its much harder to understand and learn about race that’s how I think books and stories would help in a smaller town. In the book Beyond heroes and holidays, the author mentions how she starts off her semester with their students asking them to describe some of their beliefs about teaching and about how society works (Lee, Menkart, & Okazawa-Rey, 2008).I believe this would be a great way to teach, as well as gain a new understanding to the students’ viewpoints on race. This activity is also something that students can see their views evolving throughout the year and will defiantly be something I will be using as a tool in the…

In simple terms, cultural diversity can be defined as the level of diversity or difference in a given society. Societies that display high levels of diversity exhibit many differences across that population. Differences can include skin color, religious affiliation, cultural practices and other ethnic beliefs and customs. Immigration is a major factor in determining the level of diversity that a given society is exposed to. Ever since the dawn of time, humans have traveled the globe in curiosity to interact with other civilizations. These interactions were either well intentioned to share and form partnerships, or militaristic conquests to expand territories and force populations to conform to foreign ideals. These such interactions helped to foster cultural diversity both genetically, as is the case with Attila the Hun, or substantively through the spread of cultural beliefs and practices worldwide.…

Few decades ago, people from different places of the world started coming to America, well known as the land of opportunity – the promised land for several reasons: search of employment opportunities, to leave poverty behind, cost of living but most importantly the dream of better future. Nowadays, if walking by the streets of the famous city of the U.S it will be easy to find people from different cultures such as Hispanics, Indians, Europeans, African Americans who have been living in this country for years and already have a career, their own house and children who has been born and raised here. Due to the diversity of cultures in America, managers and professionals must be aware that in order to be respected, we must respect first. Also they should understand that each country possesses customs, beliefs and values that remain in each individual no matter what. In order to create a peaceful environment at work, managers should promote meetings about how to understand diversity. Two common words that come into place at a work setting are prejudice and ethnocentrism. For instance, when I used to work at a nursing home two years ago, I witnessed how this two concepts can affect the way you do your work. By that time, I was a certified nursing assistant and ninety percent of the nursing staff was formed by Philippine people. At first, I did not have any problem with that because I respect everybody’s cultures and beliefs. As days were passing, I started feeling excluded because the nurses talked in their own language in front of me. At the same time, I was assigned to do the “dirty job” while the others were sitting in the conference room drinking coffee. I started getting tired of this situation, I felt they thought they were in a higher level than me. One day I asked the supervisor if there was any reason why they seemed hesitant to accept someone from other culture…
