Cultural Competency In Health Care
Cultural competency is defined as a person having enough knowledge of cultural groups that are different from themselves to be able to interact with diverse groups and make them feel respected and understood (Harkreader, 2007). Nurses need to exhibit an attitude that values differences, and understand their own beliefs, before they can care and accept other cultures (Harkreader, 2007). Developing a plan to help meet the health care needs of transgender individuals could most likely be implemented in 5 years. The short-term goal would be to provide continuous education to all staff members regarding the specific care needs of transgender individuals and using proper terminology. This goal could be implemented in a time frame of 6-12 months. Organizations could provide educational material upon hire, as well as on a yearly basis for a refresher. Another short- term goal would be to offer “all-gender” restrooms, this goal could be implemented in 1-3 years to fully switch all facilities to have the same option. A mid-term goal would be to offer education classes to the public. These …show more content…
The assigned birth sex is important to know in health care, to ensure the patient is receiving the care that is applicable to them. One instance this facility encountered was during a surgery case for a 26-year-old male-to-female transgender individual. On the schedule and in her chart, it identified her as female, so when the medical assistants where preparing her for surgery, they asked her for a urine sample to test her HCG levels. The patient became very upset and felt the nurses should have known her situation and requested to speak to the medical director as well as the director of nursing. This could have been avoided if both genders where listed on the schedule, or improvement in the communication

    There are many individuals who do not know about the increasingly common identity known as transgender. Transgender is a term that describes a person who identifies as the sex opposite of what is stated on their birth certificate. Also, a numerous amount of people don 't recognize the growing population of individuals who are gender-nonconforming, which means they identify themselves as neither man nor woman. To a large sum of transgender people life is the equivalent of being trapped in a cage, a cage that is your own body. Herman. The question has arisen: should it be acceptable for transgender people to use public facilities based on their gender identity?
