In society today, depending on an individual’s background, religion, and race there are definitely different cultural backgrounds and values, still having to live together and survive on one another in this world. Culture backgrounds are founded to be a systematic way of sharing customs, beliefs and behaviors. Individual societies use different ways and things to deal with the world and others around them. These ways of coping are passed along from person to person and from generation to generation in the learning process. Cultural backgrounds help us to grasp the significance of how things are developed and changed. Cultural background is your life experience as shaped by ethnicity, race, language, religion, sexual orientation, geographical area, socioeconomic status, and gender. It is the primary source from which we form our identity. Have you ever thought to yourself, “Why do I act the way that I do? What caused me to make that decision?” I strongly believe that my life choices and behaviors are directly impacted by my culture background.
How Cultural Background Impacts Our Relationships
Although we are individuals, our cultural background plays a big part in who we are and how we function in our relationships. We have certain values, traits and ideas about relationships that are formed through our upbringing in our specific cultures. Here’s some ways that our cultural background impacts our relationships:
· Our views on equality. Different cultures have varying views on the level of equality in relationships between men and women. Some cultures feel that men and women should play fairly equal roles, while others have more traditional views of how men and women should act and behave. Our culture’s position on gender roles and equality will impact our relationships as we figure out how to make sense of those roles in our own situations. · Our views on commitment.
