“At Damien Memorial School, what makes us different, unites us.” Over the years that I’ve been here at Damien I’ve come to realize that the quote above is rather true in ways that other schools haven’t quite experienced. Despite the fact that we’re a pretty small school compared to Punahou, Kamehameha, Iolani, or Sacred Hearts, we’re all different whether it’s our personality or our ethnic backgrounds. These two things help to unite all of us as a community to understand people whose ancestors are from different parts of the world and how it has shaped someone and their life. If it weren’t for the diversity amongst the students and teachers at Damien, it would be boring because everyone would be the same. Nevertheless, diversity allows us to…

There are many important landmarks from colonial times that are important for current and future learning and involvement. Many of which have a strong connection to the Colonial Williamsburg foundation’s mission statement: “That the future may learn from the past”. The significance during colonial times is great in all these buildings and they have deep value to citizens today. These buildings, the Capitol building, the Governor's Palace and the Magazine, do have a considerable amount of value, but they did not have the characteristics necessary for a commemorative coin. As a result of the Bruton Parish church having many valued characteristics, and is the most important, it should be the building honored with a commemorative coin.…

Reconstructed buildings from colonial times fill Colonial Williamsburg and they are all amazing to behold. The Capitol building, the magazine, the governor’s palace and many more historical buildings were beautifully reconstructed to represent the buildings that were there during the colonial times. All these buildings are important now, as they were in the colonial times. The Bruton Parish Church most deserves a commemorative coin though, because it was a hospital and storehouse during the Battle of Yorktown and during the Civil War, is still a running parish that many people attend weekly, was the third Anglican Church, so it was a model for later churches, and was a gathering place for all of the citizens.…

Many individuals interpret diversity differently specifically in the United States because of its melting pot of distinct cultures and lifestyles. In his essay “People Like Us”, David Brooks’ argues that although the United States is a diverse nation as a whole, it is homogeneous in specific aspects like interactions between people. To some extent, his observation is true; people tend to stick to what or who they are comfortable with. There are also exceptions where the American people attempt to establish relationships with others because of their desire to expand out of their norm. For instance, Brooks excludes the explanation of diversity integration in the United States, where instead focuses on racial integration as the definition of diversity in America. He also makes assumptions that people purposefully intend to segregate themselves and underestimates their capability of living together because of their location, political values and personal appeal.…

In result, it is difficult for them to see the struggles of non-white people. McIntosh acknowledges this fact and was able to isolate herself from the community in order to look closely at the gap between the white people and the non-white people. Her tone was very neutral, she was not trying to be in favor to neither groups. I also appreciate the fact that she mentioned how she would forget these inequalities if she did not record them down in writing. It shows that she actually performed an observation to to be able to perceive the actual problems in the community, not making up a fake information to support her claims. In addition, her struggle to memorize the white privilege also support her earlier statement about the white people's inability to distinguish the intangible…

The average David Douglas High School student has to hear the word “diversity” at least 100 times throughout assemblies, student elections, and announcements via intercom. Let me explain. David Douglas High School is one of the biggest and most diverse schools in Oregon. In the halls of DDHS, you’ll never meet the same person twice in one day. Our school’s diversity is reflected in our clubs, too: Asian American Youth Leadership Club, Black Student Union, Bhutanese Club, Gay-Straight Alliance, Latino Club, Somali Club… the list goes on. This sanctuary high school never made me feel left out as a minority.…

Using our institution’s motto of “It’s All Here,” is very indicative of the key qualities of the Hawk experience. Residential communities are not just where students go to sleep and shower, it becomes their home. And home is where those foundational elements are rooted in an individual that assist in developing a sense of well-being, identity, activism and living in a larger global context. Our resident communities are composed of various gender identities, religious affiliations, racial and ethnic identities and cultures. So it’s important that every single resident is contributing to a community that is diverse and open to accepting people that have not encountered yet. More so, those same values stated beforehand: Well-Being, Identity, Inclusive…
