Crohn's Disease Personal Statement
When I was seven, I began experiencing extreme weight loss and severe abdominal pain. I stayed in a children’s hospital for two weeks until the doctors were finally able to identify the cause of my symptoms. They diagnosed me with Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease is not a well known disease like cancer, heart disease or diabetes, but it currently affects almost two million Americans. These more prevalent diseases have extensive foundations that raise money and awareness for those who endure the condition, but because Crohn’s disease is not as well known, it does not have the same level of funding or support. My life’s goal is to raise money for this cause, and to become a research scientist to help aid in finding a cure to my disease. Over the past nine years I have gone from taking medications four times a day, to only taking it twice a day. This change has allowed me to play field hockey with my friends in the fall, workout in the winter off season, and then jump right back …show more content…
I enjoy my science classes because they satisfy my curious side. I do not just want to know that the deltoid is the muscle found in the upper arm, I want to know it works because the myosin and actin fibers contract when nerve impulses are sent from the brain. This curiosity is what I believe will help me complete the proper schooling needed to become a research scientist. In the meantime, I can help raise money for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. This is a major foundation that holds 5k walks throughout the United States. I participate annually by forming a team and soliciting sponsors to support my friends and me for the 5k walk. This not only raises money for research, but I also have an enjoyable time racing with my friends, exploring unknown paths, and being in the comforting company of hundreds of other people who have experienced the same

Crohn's disease affects an individual's immune system by making it weaker and unable for the immune cells to attack the foreign viruses and bacteria. It can begin with taking antibiotics that depletate the natural bacteria in the body, resulting in an increased resistance to the point of which the immune cells take down both the good and bad bacteria until the resistance becomes too strong, and the body is unable to protect itself from either. The inflammation results in diarrhea, fatigue, vomiting, and fibrosis.…

The modern diet for most nations, particularly North American, has become saturated with heavily processed foods. This spike in consumption of things such as refined wheat, meats, sugars, and fats has also lead to a myriad of diseases and disorders seen almost exclusively in developed countries. Out of these conditions one of the most misunderstood and varying is Crohn's disease, which causes extreme pain and discomfort and is essentially incurable. While widely debated, the exact cause of Crohn's has not been discovered which has led to several theories as to where it comes from. Despite the relatively large population of those who suffer from Crohn's, and the massive impact that the disease has on their lives, there is little understanding of the disease in those who do not have it, and even those who do. This article will seek to explain the symptoms and mechanisms behind the disease, possible causes and factors, as well as the difficulties and life changes those afflicted with the disease must face, in order to help spread knowledge and awareness.…

In my lifetime, my experiences have given me a unique perspective that has driven my ambitions. In going to various different schools, one public, one therapeutic, and one private, I have met people from a variety of backgrounds who have taught me values that I have incorporated into my personality. My core values have become scholarship, passion, and altruism. Henceforth, my “bucket list” is comprised of experiences that I wish to have that correlate to those core values. Foremost, in the spirit of scholarship and altruism, I wish to study neuroscience in a desire to develop medical solutions to mental disorders, to help those who are struggling with mental illness. I am fascinated with the human brain. After completing a Brain and Behavior course in tenth grade, I recognized the passion I have for neuroscience. Next, in having so many broad experiences I have discovered my love for photography. Through photography, I can capture happy memories and save them to remember at a later time. So, on my bucket list I wish to travel the world and capture my travels through photography. Traveling has always been an integral part of my life, and through photography I wish to explore the world; by carrying around a camera one becomes more open and interested in one’s surroundings. I believe that traveling is essential for the soul; trekking the world will help quench my curious nature. In the fall of eleventh grade I decided to try something new and join my school’s cross-country team. Cross-country was a way to push myself and, since joining, I have been a passionate daily runner. Running is my release and my way of coping with stress. Consequently, my goal is to eventually run in a marathon. My bucket list has been comprised of experiences that I…

Crohn’s Disease gave me a different outlook on life that I believe will shape me into a great lawyer. In life most things are not black and white, and because Crohn’s Disease is an invisible illness I learned that things are not always that people may initially see them to be and with careful analysis one can uncover what is really beneath the surface. Although I will always struggle with the physical components of Crohn’s Disease, I am mentally prepared for the new climb, which will hopefully be Seton Hall Law School. Because of my personal experience with being chronically ill and my interactions with many people I have met throughout my journey battling this illness, I have a further interest in practicing health care law. This disease has…

Although, my educational interest is the catalyst for my pursuit of becoming a doctor; my motivation emanated from more than just wanting to learn how to assess and treat many different conditions. August 31, 2015 is a day I will never forget. My grandmother called and informed me that my mother had just gotten into a car accident. She told me that the car flipped about four times, immediately there was a multitude of thoughts and emotions running through my mind. Arriving at the hospital, I was scared, dejected and very anxious. Walking into the room, seeing my mother in a neck brace and groaning in pain instantly brought tears to my eyes. I…

A career in the healthcare field may be a logical choice to many because of the pay or the general supply of jobs available, but to me I want to be a part of this field because of its sense of community and the aspect care. My ultimate goal is to become an Ultrasound Technician and to eventually get a degree in another related health career. I plan on attending Oregon Institute of technology, since it’s the only school in my state that offers this. If I have the power to gain more knowledge, then I will pursue this broader perspective even if this means becoming a Nurse or a Medical assistant, I will work hard to give back to my community. I understand that I don’t have the finances to attend a school that offers this career, but I have the…

I chose to pursue a STEM degree for multiple reasons. First, my lifelong goal is to attain a career where I can help others. All humans were placed on this Earth the same way, and no one deserves to suffer from life-threatening diseases and illnesses. I believe that I can help others by researching diseases, illnesses, and finding cures. Therefore, I'm double majoring in microbiology and medical laboratory science, and plan on becoming a clinical pathologist. Science always intrigues me, and the human body continues to amaze me every day. Strangely, we live in these bodies our whole lives, but still don't know how to cure certain diseases affecting the body. Granted, many advances continue to be made in the medical field, however, I would like…
