Tobolowsky’s article echoes thoughts and feelings about Santa, fears about life, and general doubts that are common to almost every child at some point in his or her life. Stephen describes childhood events and his own propensity toward fear and doubt in a frank and humorous manner that reminds me of Ralphie’s narration in A Christmas Story. Underneath the humor, however, there exists the real torment of doubt and fear that Stephen experiences, fear of the dark, fear of strange noises at night, fear of monsters living in his bedroom. While these fears simply frustrate his well-intentioned parents, they drive Stephen to create remedies of his own to allay his fears. However,…

This article talks about a concerned parent who has a son that wanted to dress like a princess for Halloween. She was concerned that people and other children would be judgmental of his choice of costume. The boy, Danny, did not want to dress like any characters most boys would choose, such as Peter Pan. Danny’s mom is not only concerned with the fact that he wanted to dress like a princess, but also that this phase is reaching the rest of his life as well. He likes many aspects that girls are associated with, such as playing with toy ponies. Danny does not have a father to look to for advice because he was killed before Danny was born. Danny was not introduced to the way in which boys are supposed to act and dress like. He had no clue that his choice of outfit was meant for a girl to wear. Danny did not care what other people thought about him and decided to not go with the social standard for boy’s attire. He proudly wore his princess Halloween costume to school. Danny’s mom was happy with the decision she made to let him wear the costume he wanted for Halloween.…

I believe people dress up on Halloween as stereotype of someone else culture because they want to be unique and fun at the same time. I do believe that it is racist because I do not think they take the time to know about the culture and what has happen to the culture in the past. In their heads they just think “Oh this is going to be a fun costume this year” and dress up not thinking it is going to offend anyone. Or they do know it is going to offend but they still do it because they do not care.…

I was almost labeled a hamster killer. The first pets i got were dwarf hamsters. I went to petsmart with my mom and picked out two hamsters that were supposedly both girls, but one ended up being a boy. One's name was Caesar and the other Felipe. They weren’t always the nicest, but that didn’t make me love them any less. There was this one time that both of my dwarf hamster's got out while i was at school. My mom told me when i got home that she closed the door to my bedroom because they had escaped. I searched everywhere in my room for them. One hamster was under my bed and the other under my sister's bed since we shared a room at the time. Hamsters always find a way to get into the hardest places to find them in. I caught the one under my sisters bed and he was fine. When i went to get the other one out something funny, but sad happened. I have bins with wheels on them that i would roll under my bed and store stuff in. I had to roll the one under my bed out to see where the hamster was because i couldn't find her. So, as im doing this my mom came in the room to see if i had caught them. I was rolling the bin out as i saw something flat squashed on the floor…

    The History of Halloween

Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Once the holiday was brought to America, it was slowly changed over generations into the current version of the holiday. Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, visiting "haunted houses", carving jack-o-lanterns, and costume parties.…
