Critical Essay Science fiction is a really weird genre. It has some odd stories. These are some more oddballs.
“A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury is about hunters that time travel to kill various types of animals, dinosaurs being one of them. One of the travelers, Eckels, stepped off the path that no one could leave and it changed history. The leader killed him with a gun, hence the name sound of thunder.
“Nethergrave” by Gloria Skurzynski is about a boy named Jeremy who is not liked at his school. He has an online chat room that is themed for death. When he gets there late the people leave and a mystical force sucks him in the computer forever.
Based on the use of technology, the development of characters, and the main message of the stories “Sound of Thunder” is a better work of science fiction.
When it comes to technology, “Sound of Thunder” uses it more effectively than “Nethergrave”.In Sound of Thunder, the type of technology used is time travel. They use it to kill historic beasts. For example, the story states, “ Time safari we take you there you shoot it. ” (Bradbury). As this example shows, people can time travel to kill extinct beasts. People would be interested in this because time travel has not been proven possible.
However, Nethergrave, uses technology as a portal to another world. For instance, the story states, “On Jeremy’s twenty-one inch monitor with it’s sixteen million colors a whirling vortex appears.” (Skurzynski). The way that Nethergrave uses technology is less effective because a portal out of a computer screen just doesn’t make sense.
Overall, these examples illustrate that Sound of thunder uses technology better.
When it comes to character development, Nethergrave helps us to get to know the main character better. In Nethergrave, the author helps us to know the main character by showing a little backstory before everything happens. For example, the story states, “It didn’t matter that he’d delibrately forgot to bring his

The setting of “A Sound of Thunder” was back around the time of B.C., when the dinosaurs were around. In “Nethergrave” the setting was modern day. I think that “A Sound of Thunder” used this literary element more effectively because I really felt that I time traveled to the past and that I was standing right in front of the dinosaurs when they were describing the dinosaur. With the story “Nethergrave” I had a hard time believing I was there in another world because there was not much description of the other world. I also had a hard time telling what time the setting was taking place because I thought when he went into the computer he had went to the future.…

The audience gains a greater understanding and appreciation of the consequences and societal issues presented through the author’s texts of changing perspectives. This greater understanding is represented by a wide range of language techniques showing the quality of a change of perspective in life. In the short story ‘Forgotten Jelly’ by Megan Jacobson, it demonstrates how an individual understands the consequences and issues while time progresses, which in turn leads to a change of perspective. Likewise, in the poem ‘Mending Wall’ by Robert Frost, we observe how, as the characters develop, they understand and gradually learn more about the perspective of others and eventually leading to a change of their previous views.…

Ray Bradbury’s “A Sound of Thunder” follows Eckels as he joins a hunting party to travel back in time to kill a Tyrannosaurus rex. As the group waits to board the Time Machine, they discuss the results of the recent election in which the more moderate Keith triumphed over the tyrannical Deutscher. After the party arrives in the past, they are warned of the dangers of tiny alterations to the timeline by their safari guides, Travis and Lesperance. Travis explains that the hunters must remain on the levitating path to avoid disturbing the environment, and to only shoot the prey tagged by prior scouts. The party begins its hunt, but when the dinosaur approaches, Eckels is frightened and runs off the path back to the Time Machine. When…

The Stranger, written by Albert Camus, is a novel full of existentialism. This nonfiction story begins with the main character, Meursault, attending his mother’s funeral. As the story proceeds, Meursault befriends a man and becomes involved in something that will cost him his life. Camus portrays the meaninglessness of human life through the attitudes and lifestyle of Meursault. Camus uses a number of different elements of style to convey his message. Three elements of style that show Meursault’s plain indifference to life are contrast, point of view, and characterization. As the elements of the novel are discussed, the theme of Camus will become clear.…

Science Fiction is a popular and interesting genre’s to read. It is a genre that helps childhood dreams of living in other worlds come to life, It is known as the literature of ideas because of the concept of imagination used in the stories e.g. time traveling, space travel, alien races, dystopias, utopias etc. It brings us to an imaginative world of the future helping us portray things we could never imagine of doing or seeing. It helps us picture the many consequences that creations of the future can bring us. As Ray Bradbury quoted “I don’t try to describe the future. I try to prevent it” the quote shows that this author does not only write to create an image of the future, but he writes to show people what the outcomes of certain future inventions could bring, and to warn everyone of the possible chaos caused by future inventions. The author is saying that just because all inventions or creation, it does not mean that they always have a positive effect, and could also have a negative effect. This is shown to be true in stories such as Sand Kings where a man mistreats alien pets, which in the start seem harmless but slowly form into a huge danger. Another example is in the story “The sound of thunder” when the character made the slightest change in the past, it affected the future greatly causing a lot of changes. This shows the writers trying to show us that the creations could really affect our lifestyle or way of living, so they warn us by writing about it in science fiction stories.…

The first grouping I have chosen is C, D and E. These three extracts have the same mode, which is to be read. Extract C is an account written in first person we know this as he uses a first person singular pronoun ‘I’. He uses personal pronouns as it is the man’s account of what happened at the time of the event, the extract is him recalling personal events. We know from the content it is to be read as it is evidence of an eye witness given to the US enquiry into the sinking of the Titanic, therefore investigators will be reading the account. Text D is an extract from ‘The passionate Shepard to his love’ by Christopher Marlow its mode is also to be read as it is a poem. Poems are also written to be heard but the second mode is to be read as most of its audience will read it. We can see it is written to be heard with the phonology of the words ‘fields’ ‘yields’. These words rhyme and make it easy for the reader to read, also the graphology of the extract as it is written in a stanza in short lines means it can be read and heard fluently. Extract E is an extract from Microsoft windows installation manual. It is a text to be read as it links back to the context of it being a manual to instruct. Its graphology shows us it is to be read as it shows pictures for examples of how to set it up and it is built pointed so it is simple for people who are struggling with downloading the windows program and they will need the easy and clear to read instructions.…

A non-communicable disease, or NCD, is a medical condition or disease which by definition is non-infectious and non-transmissible among people. NCDs may be chronic diseases of long duration and slow progression, or they may result in more rapid death such as some types of sudden stroke. They include autoimmune diseases, heart disease, stroke, many cancers, asthma, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, cataracts, and more. While sometimes (incorrectly) referred to as synonymous with "chronic diseases", NCDs are distinguished only by their non-infectious cause, not necessarily by their duration. Some chronic diseases of long duration, such as HIV/AIDS, are caused by transmissible infections. Chronic diseases require chronic care management as do all diseases that are slow to develop and of long duration.…

English isn't managing to sweep all else before it -- and if it ever does become the universal language, many of those who speak it won't understand one another by Barbara Wallraff ECAUSE I am interested in what happens to the English language, over the past year or so I've been asking people, at dinner parties and professional gatherings and so on, whether they think that English is well on its way to being the global language. Typically, they look puzzled about why I would even bother to ask such an obvious question. They say firmly, Of course. Then they start talking about the Internet. We're just having a conversation, so I refrain from launching into everything I'm about to tell you. It's not that I believe they're actually wrong. But the idea of English as a global language doesn't mean what they think it does -- at least, not according to people I've interviewed whose professions are bound up especially closely in what happens to the English language. English has inarguably achieved some sort of global status. Whenever we turn on the news to find out what's happening in East Asia, or the Balkans, or Africa, or South America, or practically anyplace, local people are being interviewed and telling us about it in English. This past April the journalist Ted Anthony, in one of two articles about global English that he wrote for the Associated Press, observed, "When Pope John Paul II arrived in the Middle East last month to retrace Christ's footsteps and addressed Christians, Muslims and Jews, the pontiff spoke not Latin, not Arabic, not Hebrew, not his native Polish. He spoke in English." Indeed, by now lists of facts about the amazing reach of our language may have begun to sound awfully familiar. Have we heard these particular facts before, or only others like them? English is the working language of the Asian trade group ASEAN. It is the de facto working language of 98 percent of German…
