Rodman was reprimanded in June 1986 for receiving an inordinate number of personal telephone calls and visitors at her work station, which was disruptive to her own work and to her co-workers. Rodman was to have no personal telephone calls during work hours outside of a designated break or dinner time, in which event they were to occur in an area not visible to patients, physicians, or other department staff. When leaving the department for dinner, Rodman was to report to her immediate supervisor and was not to leave the hospital. Rodman was to make every effort to resolve the matters in her personal life that were causing problems at work. Nevertheless, according to the testimony of her supervisor, extremely disruptive telephone calls continued. The doctors were beginning to comment on it. The staff was getting more distressed. According to her supervisor, “[A]gain we talked about the visits, the behavior at the desk. When it got pretty bad with the phone calls, Billie would slam charts, push chairs and be a little abrupt with the people she worked with.” Another written reprimand in November of 1986 warned Rodman that her job was in jeopardy if the disruptive behavior continued. The supervisor established restrictions prohibiting the claimant from having visitors at the department and instructed her to notify security if there was a potential problem.…

Case managers are responsible for many aspects of a consumer’s case (primary management of case – which may include service acquisition, housing, benefit utilization, etc). Case managers tend to be the go to person when something happens (positive or negative) and are expected to provide immediate support and help the consumer resolve and deal the situation. Along with this comes documentation expectations, which is set by the organization or reimbursement entity, to prove work completed as well as progression that is outcome based. This is evident in a study completed by Kraus and Stein (2013), which indicates “Professionals in community mental health face structural and systematic barriers to providing support services to consumers, including large caseloads, low salaries, and substantial amounts of paperwork. These conditions frequently result in high job turnover, lower levels of job satisfaction and higher reports of professional burnout among agency staff” (p. 8). In 2006, Yang, Garis, and McClure indicated, “One of the difficult issues facing project staff is the slow progress hard-to-serve elders make. Clinicians must be patient and identify small evidence of progress” (p. 77). Overbearing caseloads can cause burnout as well, decreased case manager’s ability to focus and provide quality care. Yamatani, Engel, and Spjeldnes (2009) states,…

    The Trent Affair

    • 469 Words
    • 2 Pages

The Trent Affair, also known as the Mason and Slidell Affair, was an international diplomatic incident that occurred during the American Civil War. On November 8th 1861, the USS San Jacinto, intercepted the British mail packet Trent and removed it as contraband of two war Confederate diplomats, who were James Mason and John Slidell. The envoys were bound for Great Britain and France to press the Confederacys' case for diplomatic recognition by Europe. The initial reaction in the United States was to rally against Britain, threatening war; but President Abraham Lincoln and his top advisers did not want to risk war. In the Confederate States, the hope was that the incident would lead to a permanent rupture in Anglo-American relations and even diplomatic recognition by Britain of the Confederacy. The boarding of the "Trent" was an outrage of a national relationship, which could not escape the anger of all the nations that were bordering on the sea. The British mail packet "Trent", was taken by a person who was too stupid to foresee its bad effect, on the relations which the persons' own country was endeavoring to maintain with Europe. It produced a sensation, which for awhile, seemed to threaten the total failure of coercion. It is not surprising that on getting the full news of the event, President Lincoln said to the attorney general, "I am not getting much sleep out of that exploit of Wilkes, and I suppose we must look up the law of the case. I am not much of a prize lawyer, but it seems to me, that it is pretty clear, that if Wilkes saw fit to make that capture on the high seas, he had no right to turn his quarterdeck into a prize court." The shrewd President saw that Wilkes could not let the "Trent" go free. The President also soon realized that the rash act was very inopportune, as well as illegal. Mr. Seward hurried to communicate with Mr. Adams, the United States minister at London, the stupid suggestion that "in the capture of Messrs. Mason and Slidell on…
