Crime Rates in Japan
Search any on-line data source (e.g., CIA Factbook, CountryReports.org, U.S. State Department) to find specific country information on any of the three high-homicide and low-homicide countries identified in class in an effort to determine the causes or correlates of these high or low rates, answering the questions below (citing any data you find in these sources):
a. Is there any consistent relationship between levels of education and homicide rates? I did Japan and there was no relationship with education and crimes.
b. Is there any consistent relationship between economic indicators and homicide rates? If so, which ones? They had a low homicide rates because of the high surveillance of the Japanese population.
c. Are there are other demographic, social, or technological indicators reported that appear to be related to homicide rates in these high- and low-homicide rate countries? Japan's prison crime rate also pales in comparison to America's prison crime rate (where guns don't exist either). Japan's low crime rate is due to their unique "group" based society. All Japanese citizens are restricted from owning weapons of any kind, including swords. Unless you are a licensed hunter, which is rare, and they are only permitted shotguns.
d. Can you offer reasonable explanations for any of the relationships you find (or reasons for the lack of any relationships if none are found)? I see that Japan have stricter policemen that will actual assault law breakers and they are on a constant watch over there people so they fear to break laws as often as other countries who don’t suffer the same consequences as them.

In the previous year, 2008 Detroit reported the murder rate of 339. This seemed to be an overall drop from the previous year 383. Though this seems like a positive sign for the city, this merely shows a decrease in violent crimes in the nation. (Hendron, 2009) It seems that more major cities have seen a drop in crime rates over time. The 339 murders over a population just over 951,000 make Detroit the deadliest metropolitan area in the United States. Additionally, Police officials in Detroit had misreported overall 2008 murder figures intentionally to avoid this distinction. (Hendron, 2009) Minneapolis, in comparison, saw their murders drop from about forty to eighteen percent in 2008. (Kohler, 2009) As the rates of crime for these areas show patterns, one thing is certain, Detroit as a whole has a higher crime rate capacity. It appears that in Detroit the crime rate decreased approximately 11% and Minneapolis dropped about 20%.…

    Gun Control vs. Gun Rights

I was born in Tokyo, Japan and moved to the United States when I was six. I still go visit my relatives and friends in Japan every other year. "Japan - described as having the strictest controls in the world - bans private possession of firearms except by people who need them for official duties or by licensed hunters, shooters, athletes, dealers or collectors." (Stencel pg. 164). Walking in a large downtown area of Tokyo in the middle of the night feels very different from walking in downtown Atlanta at nighttime. There are many people walking around town even past midnight in Japan because the crime rate is lower than it is here in the U.S. People don't worry as much as they do here in the U.S. about being robbed, kidnapped, etc. Unfortunately, Japan's crime rate in general is higher than it was before. I would here about murders in Japan happening with knives and such, but very rarely do I here about murders or other such crimes happening with firearms. But the crime rate is still much lower than compared to the U.S.' crime rate. Even though murders and other crimes can never be brought down to zero unless everyone's on Prozak 24 hours a day, I believe that the serious crimes would go down significantly if firearms are kept away from the public.…
