Areas of interest are murder, burglary, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, larceny/theft, auto theft and arson. This module will examine the importance of criminal data and its effect on the criminal justice system. For instance, is it important for a law enforcement agency to evaluate the crimes occurring in their city or jurisdiction? Is it important for citizens to know how safe is the area in which they live? If so, how is that information gathered and disseminated to the general public? How does the law enforcement component of the criminal justice system use the information to reduce crime or even predict it in the future? With the advent of applicable technology, law enforcement agencies and criminologists are now examining crime patterns, suspect information, as well as date and time of crimes in an effort to predict probable occurrences and locations of future crimes.…

Research gather by the Journal “Impacts of “three Strikes and You’re Out” on Crime Trends in California and Throughout the United States” shows that the Three Strikes law may not have such a large impact on the reduction of crime. In fact, the effects of this policy may not even come from the incarceration of third strikers, but from its deterrent effect. Statistics gathered in the years shortly after the law was implemented showed that California had a “20.2% total crime drop and the 13.8% decline in violent crime from 1994 to 1997 (Lungren, 1997), and a 46% decline in the index crime rate from 1992 to 2002.”(SagePub) Overall in the Three Strikes states, crime dropped almost 3% more rapidly than in the years prior to the implementation of…

Two major crimes reporting programs exist. The first is the Uniform Crimes Reports or UCR (National Institute of Justice, 2009). The UCR is utilized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for documenting crimes and making decisions on policies. The eight crimes that are tracked by the UCR are arson, robbery, rape, theft, burglary, aggravated assault, murder, and vehicle theft. The data contains reports of specific incidents of arrests but does not include details of arrest. Only the most serious offense of an arrest is recorded. Approximately over Seventeen thousand law enforcement agencies convey information to the Federal Bureau Investigation through the UCR database. However, the data is not a useful tool for investigating local crimes due to inadequate reporting.…

Criminologists believe that the decline is a result of varying factors in the criminal justice system. There is a causal link between legalized abortion and the drop in crime during the 1990’s. The implementation of the Three Strikes Law in state governments has also aided in decreasing crime rates. These factors function cohesively to affect crime rates. Conversely, the economy impact has the weakest correlation to be able to account for the reduction. Crime rates in the United States have steadily declined in the past twenty years due to the legalization of abortion as well as the implementation of the three strikes law.…

Policing have become a major concern today in the United States. The citizens of the United States confidence and trust in policing of the police are at the lowest point since the Rodney King beating. Many Americans still report confidence in the police, however an unprecedented number of Americans also report no or very little confidence in policing. Throughout history poor police/community relations in minority and low-income neighborhoods has documented. It has been exacerbated by egregious acts of misconduct, some of which have been captured on video and shared on social media. Many people such as activists, politicians, and police officials themselves have called for better education and equipment, from de-escalation training to body-worn…
