Cricket in Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh national cricket team (Bengali: বাংলাদেশ জাতীয় ক্রিকেট দল) is a national cricket team representing Bangladesh. The team is administered by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Bangladesh is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with Test and One Day International (ODI) status. It played its first Test match in 2000 against India in Dhaka, becoming the tenth Test cricket playing nation.
Bangladesh's first official foray into international cricket came in the 1979 ICC Trophy in England, leaving the tournament with 2 wins and 2 defeats. Seven years later, on 31 March 1986, Bangladesh played in its first ODI match against Pakistan in the 1986 Asia Cup. Cricket has gradually become very popular in urban areas of the country. Although football was the most popular game for a long time, cricket gained momentum and soon surpassed football, especially after Bangladesh won the 1997 ICC Trophy in Malaysia. By winning the tournament, Bangladesh qualified for the 1999 Cricket World Cup for the first time, where they defeated Pakistan, creating one of the biggest upsets in their cricketing history. In 1997, Bangladesh became a regular ICC member with the right to play ODIs. It attained the status of a Test playing country on 26 June 2000.
Bangladesh hold the record for most consecutive losses in Tests (21 between 1999 and 2002) and ODIs (23 between 2001 and 2004). After gaining full member status with the ICC, Bangladesh had to wait until 2004 for its first ODI win since the 1999 World Cup. The team on the losing side on that occasion was Zimbabwe, who also participated in Bangladesh's maiden Test victory in 2005; by securing a draw in the second match, Bangladesh won their first Test series. In 2009 Bangladesh toured the West Indies for two Tests and by winning both secured their first overseas series victory.
As of April 2012, Bangladesh has played 73 Tests, winning only 3. Its first victory was against a young and inexperienced Zimbabwe team,

Trophies and awards won in cricket - a game played by a few countries, namely Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe - do not mean much as they do not have international recognition or stature. Moreover, it is played at a much, much lesser scale in a few other countries and whatever indications we have show that cricket does not have the strength to spread all over the globe. Further, matches played by stronger countries against weak oppositions like Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, end being one sided or a cake walk. Any frontline opposition batsman or a strike bowler will either be able to notch up big scores or take bagful of wickets against weak oppositions without much…

    West Indian Culture

Cricket today, as it has been said many times, is not what it used to be. Unfortunately many young West Indians know very little of what is once was and what it stood for, they take for granted the techniques and its origins. The level of West Indies cricket has been diluted due to the increase of tourism and fast paced games. However there are many West Indians who hold strong to the fact that cricket is part of our culture and heritage. This archipelago in the Americas has produced many fine cricketers throughout the years. The Caribbean is a unique multicultural and multiethnic region; the majority of the population was forced to migrate after the original inhabitants faced almost complete annihilation. The survivors were at no level to repopulate the Caribbean. As a result there was no previous pattern for the new comers to follow; they had to create their own. West Indians had to develop their own religion, food, politics, art and essentially their entire culture. Cricket was one such aspect, though not their own, over time they moulded and shaped it into what it is today. Cricket came to the West Indies via the English military that were deployed to defeat Napoleon’s west India project and to suppress uprisings, they played the game during their free time, which was relaxing and reminded them of home. The game was introduced as a means of portraying the high statute that was English. During the Victorian age the English empire was at its peak, it had expanded considerably and was proud of its successes, she deemed herself as superior in commerce, morals and race. At this time the only thing that was missing was cricket, Lord Harris, a colonial administrator saw cricket as a method of teaching discipline, loyalty and acceptance of decisions in order to consolidate the empire.…

The riverine country of Bangladesh (“Land of the Bengals”) is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, and its people are predominantly Muslim. As the eastern portion of the historical region of Bengal, the area once formed, along with what is now the Indian state of West Bengal, the province of Bengal in British India. With the partition of India in 1947, it became the Pakistani province of East Bengal (later renamed East Pakistan), one of five provinces of Pakistan, separated from the other four by 1,100 miles (1,800 km) of Indian territory. In 1971 it became the independent country of Bangladesh, with its capital at Dhaka.…

The 1996 Cricket World Cup, also known as the Wills World Cup, represented much change in cricket for both West Indies and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka, hosting for the first time alongside India and Pakistan, had much to prove as a nation fighting on home territory. Deemed underdogs due to their previous world cup encounters, they surpassed the limit and became champions. This championship match would have united all of Sri Lanka as it was the first time they had made it to the final let alone past the first round. With all their nation’s pride on the line they were successful in not only a victory but also bringing confidence and togetherness to their country. However though the sun shun brightly upon their nation the tournament also marked one of the incidence that led to the end of West Indies as a global cricket giant. The failure of the young West Indian players of the era to carry on the dominance of cricket may have led to discouragement throughout the multinational member countries. One can compare the West Indies to Sri Lanka’s unity as a country nation, as they are one country and the West Indies team consists of many. There is a sense of solidarity represented by the sole…

History: Bangladesh was formed in the late 1971 with a battle against Pakistan. Previously, it was a part of Pakistan and was known as East Pakistan. But the people of Bangladesh wanted freedom, as there were cultural differences between East Pakistan and west Pakistan. Bengalis wanted their own state; they wanted their own government and wanted to be sovereign. Then with the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman they started the war against the superior military power of Pakistan. India also joined Bangladesh to fight against Pakistan. Finally the war was won. Since independence, the government has experienced periods of democratic and military rule.…
