“Never give up, and be confident in what you do. There may be tough times, but the difficulties which gave you face will make you more determined to achieve your objectives and to win against all odds.” This was what women’s Brazilian soccer star Marta once advised. Never giving up may sound like a goal that is impossible to reach in reality. Although that may be true, in literature there are characters who exhibit it ideally. For instance, Joan Bauer’s short story “A Letter from the Fringe” introduces a figure who showcases these traits. On a somber day, Dana, the protagonist, a high school student at Bronley High was tormented by bullies alongside her friend Sally for being overweight. Although, it seemed as if her heart had been torn out and thrown to the side, she was capable of forcing the two tyrants to flee. Afterwards, she insisted that they had no right to…

I loved art. When I was a young child I would always design new temples, and pyramids in the sand. I loved to paint, I would make my own paint and draw on anything I possibly could. I was passionate about it all. Father and mother always supported my art, but they expected me to follow father’s footsteps and become a scriber. I didn’t want to be a scriber. I wanted to be a painter. I wanted to design the newest, most beautiful pyramid in Egypt. It was a big dream, but I was determined to make it happen. I would be the greatest painter Egypt has ever seen.…

Therefore, no matter the goal you are trying to reach, always know failure comes with the enjoyment of success. If I felt like a failure after finding out I did not receive the opportunity to be accepted into the school, I would not have been able to push myself to become greater. Try and you shall succeed. If being successful or achieving a goal was easy; many people would be successful already. However, since being successful or achieving a goal takes a great deal of time and comes with failure; some people rather give up than keep on…

However, success is about working hard toward something and achieving a goal. Each and every person should set small goals for themselves on a regular basis. Setting small goals will then lead to setting even bigger goals since you know you can accomplish small ones. When those goals are met, in addition to being feeling elated, you will also feel better about yourself knowing you were successful in accomplishing a goal that you had previously set. Everybody’s definition of success is different, however, success can only be attained if you work hard toward it because nothing will ever come easy in…

    Theories of Victimization

The greatest predictor of becoming a victim in the future is if a person was a victim in the past. For example, if a person was sexually molested as a child, it's likely that person will become a victim of rape as an adult. David Finkelhor and Nancy Asigian suggest three types of characteristics increase a person's potential for victimization: Target Vulnerability, Target Gratifiability, and Target Antagonism. Target Vulnerability says someone with a physical disability or psychological distress would make that person incapable of resisting or deterring crime, which makes the victim an easy target. Target Gratifiability explains having attractive possessions, such as a certain quality, skill, or attribute that an offender wants, makes them vulnerable to predatory crime. Target Antagonism describes some characteristics, such as being gay, argumentative, or an alcoholic, may increase the risk of victimization because they "...arouse anger, jealousy, or destructive impulses in some offenders." (Siegel, pg.89)…

When somebody uses projection, rationalization, or denial it is called ego defense. Ego defense is a barrier because it is used to distort reality to protect mind, self, or ego. It is easy to blame somebody else or deny that something was wrong on our own part because that involves vulnerability. A good way to overcome the ego defense barrier is to recognize when we are wrong. Although it is hard, taking blame when we have done or said something wrong prevents arguments, fights, or guilt. Another way to overcome this barrier is to stop lying to ourselves. Once we do that, it is easier to not only stop deceiving others, but to also stop deceiving ourselves.…
