“Ona, it’s the middle of the night. Go away before away I freeze you to death!” Delza responds. Ona sprints down stairs to the noise of a gunshot and sees that her parents are being attacked by bloodthirsty snow zombies. Just at that moment Ona’s parents turn into snow zombies as well. George R. R. Martin’s short story about zombies does not focus on the zombie apocalypse as so many stories and movies do in today’s popular zombie culture. In what can only be assumed to be a far distant future, Martin’s zombies are surgically altered humans whose brains have been replaced by a synthetic alternative. This turns these formerly alive humans into form of cheap, or slave, labor that is exploited on planets where most humans are either unwilling, or unable to work (Martin, 2008). Martin’s zombies in this story harken back to the origins of the modern zombie mythos. Those being derived from the African slaves who toiled on the sugar plantations of Hatti (Estes, 2012). I do not think it is any coincidence that Martin’s zombies are…

As Steve lay in the hospital bed recovering from his injuries, that thought bounces around in his mind. Why hadn’t he looked for him? How could he have let his body rot in that ravine without at least looking for him? Why hadn’t he done something? He had been so sure that he would know when Bucky died, that he would feel it, yet all these years he had been alive and Steve hadn’t known. It didn’t matter that he had been under ice for a good portion, it should have never gotten to that point. How could he have left Bucky in that ravine?…

Their plan would have been successful if Ed would not have answered his cell phone. This infuriates Shaun, who finally snaps on Ed, drawing more attention to them by the surrounding man eating zombies. This is a pivotal moment in the movie for Shaun in whom he realizes that Ed is holding him back and decides to become the hero. Shaun begins to jump up and down while screaming to get the zombie’s attention. Shaun acts as a distraction and leads the mob of zombies away so his friends and family can survive.
