Creative Writing: Prairie Dog
Prairie Dog
We were making our way through the midwest on a very cold morning when I saw an animal that looked like a dog, but seemed to be much smaller. As I tried to near it to get a better look it barked continuously until I was out of sight. I noticed that when the animals felt alarmed the whole village quickly steps into their holes. As well as noticing that I also noticed that they make a call when there is a predator near, and once that predator is gone they give out a second call. The small little animals live in burrows underground. They live in large communities,of what seemed to be hundreds. Their burrows are mostly in shortgrass areas. Their diet seemed to consist of grass, roots, and seeds. As I sat and continued to watch them

The ecosystem roles that prairie dogs play are rather significant. Prairie dogs are primary consumers and they are important food source of all prairie-living predators such as fox, ferrets, snakes, and owls. Certain animals' survival in the wild heavily depends on the prairie dogs as main food source, such as black-footed ferrets. (1) Not only prairie dogs provide food source to their predators, the burrows they build to shelter themselves also provide big impact on other animals. For an example, snakes can hibernate in their burrows during the winter and eat their pups. Prairie dog town, which consists of multiple tunnels, can even be considered as biological oasis, since it attracts large numbers of species for using them as food resource and utilize their burrows. In the book, “A Sea of Grass,” by Outwater, she delivers a strong argument as to why prairie dogs are beneficial to the grassland ecosystem. Prairie dogs create habitats for other species, because over 200 species live nearby prairie dog burrows. The burrows are never built all the same. Some have special pockets, turn-around rooms, and others have chambers with grass. The temperature underground is convenient for species living there, being as it is warm in winter, and cooler in the summer. Outwater presents a valid reason for protecting the rodents. For example, she states,” In the process of constructing their towns of tunnels, the prairie dogs once moved tons of subsoil above ground, where they mixed it with top soil and organic matter..”(Outwater 74). Many species benefit from this churning of the soil because it creates grasses which are richer in protein. The prairie dogs also help to increase the amount of water that makes it underground, which enhances the productivity of the soil. Concurrently, more water goes into rivers and streams. Another component of prairie dogs is that they are social, loving creatures. They engage in their own communication. When they see a predator, they make a bark that signals all the dogs around to protect…

I come from Charlotte, North Carolina, one of the most up and coming cities in America. My town is a beautiful, flourishing area with a lot to offer to a variety of people. With such diversification, we have not integrated our neighborhoods, schools, or the social scene nearly enough. Communities can become racially prevalent leading to separations in culture and heritage. I can see this in the high schools throughout the area during our football games or competitions which is depriving to everyone involved. Leaving people unaware of their surroundings creates a bubble of ignorance. Mallard creek provides so much culture as it is is zoned for so many areas, however, other schools are not provided the opportunity I am. As the severance continues,…

"The average dog is a nicer person than the average person." This was said by Andy Rooney. Andy Rooney is a very, very wise man. He adopted a dog from an humane society once, just like I did. The animal shelter I got my dog from was called Humane Society Of West Michigan. The Humane Society Of West Michigan was very neat and orderly. It smelled like sanitizer and bleach mixed together. Past the main lobby there was a wide hallway you go through to get to the crowded room where they keep all the dogs. Inside this spacious room were kennels that had between 2 and 4 dogs in them. A couple of them only had 1 lonely dogs in them. This made me feel happy and sad being…

Fighting temptation describes a battle that is as much spiritual as it is emotional or physical. To be tempted is not a sin. Everyone is tempted and at different levels. Even Jesus was tempted! Temptation happens when the opportunity is presented to do what we know is wrong, whether against God, ourselves, or others. Being tempted is not wrong - it's the decision to do wrong and the corresponding action that follows.…

The better half of the last day of human civilization was rather boring and extremely uninteresting for most of mankind, even the few who felt they knew the ifs, ands, buts, speculations, and coming of the apocalypse. As the Monday morning lunch rush proceed with unintelligible yells and upward thrust middle fingers, no one had a clue something more eventful than a twenty cent increase in gas prices was going to happen. They had a whole morning of blissful, uneventful lives before it all cascaded into one pile of dung that smashed into the metaphorical fan of our little, mundane humanity.…

I live on a small farm at the top of a mountain. At the bottom of the long gravel driveway is a two story tan house with a red door and shutters. Behind the house is the barn. The barn is a baby blue, two stall barn where the horses stay and where we store hay for our animals. There are two fairly large pastures connected to the barn that the animals can graze on. If you walk past the barn to the wood line you will find a small hutch with a handful of pigs. Just past the pigs is a small shed. In the shed you can find hens roosting in their laying boxes or roaming the yard eating grass and bugs they find. Across the driveway from the house is a large field that is pastured into two fields. In one of those fields, during certain times of the year, you can find a steer grazing.…
