Creative Writing: Poecilia Capensis Spider
Stefanie walked down the hallway. “That Simon has humiliated me for the last time!”, she thought. Earlier, he had put a bug in her lunch and she had screamed in front of everyone. “I will get him back for that!”. Then, she had an idea. She would give him a present, some nice Halloween candy. But she would use poison from the exotic Poecilia Capensis spider. It would make him very sick for a few hours, but not kill him. A proper revenge. The only problem would be getting the venom. The spider might make her sick, too. And she had to plant a false trail.she would frame that boy, jack. “I will do it all at recess, she said. She went to the den of the spider. She could see its green eyes glowing through the darkness. She turned off her flashlight and crawled behind the spider she stuck her spoon into it and pulled out some dark purple venom. He took a close look at the bloody masks and saws and quickly dismissed them as fake. “An amateur job”, he said. He looked at the passed out child covered in bloody rags and noticed the candy wrappers. He saw the cave of the Poecilia Capensis and noticed that it was leaking poison out its rear end. “I wonder who poked a hole in the spider….” Then he saw her. A girl hanging back from the rest with some purple liquid on her shirt. “The same color as the spider's venom! It could be her… I should question her. He asked her a few basic questions and she started crying. “I did it,” she said. “It was just revenge for him always teasing me! He's always so mean to me and I was sick of it. I had to do something…” . Takeshi took a good look at the girl and said “there are better ways to stop bullying. You should have gone to one of your teachers. “My silence was the thickest-total-during the three years that I covered my school paintings with black paint. She had one classmate who was very quiet, but she know she could talk really loud. Maxine walked by her house and heard her screaming, in not just English, but Chinese. The young classmate was also able to read out aloud. It seemed to me that Maxine didn’t want to help the young girl, but get all the attention as the quietest girl in school. She decided to follow her young classmate into the bathroom one day after school and beat her up. Maxine squeezed her fatty, fleshy cheek in between her thumb and finger. She called her stupid, pulled her hair, and kept yelling at her to talk. “ You do have a tongue,” I said. “So use it. (pg.178)” No matter how much Maxine tried to force her, her classmate just cried but said no…

Throughout the scene facial expressions are used to display the mood shock (Miss, Caroline functions to display the facial expressions the most). Lee conveys this through imagery and similes. Miss. Caroline’s “sheer horror” is displayed to make the reader feel surprised that a proper woman such as Miss. Caroline would panic at the sight of a bug. This demonstrates to the reader that Miss. Caroline is inexperienced to study insects. When Burris plucks the bug off, Miss. Caroline is astounded and watches “in horrid fascination”. Finally, the reader experiences shock when Burris curses Miss. Caroline. Miss. Caroline’s inexperience with situations like this shocks the class and the reader. Her reaction surprises the class and they “soon were clustered around her desk” trying to comfort the disgruntled teacher. In the modern world, children are forbidden to skip school. In to TKAM however some children attend to first day only. This shocks the reader and provides a great image of what life was like back in the 1930’s.…

The spider in its attic makes an unusual and enticing allegory for Thoreau. The spider is able to create the world he wants to live in, with the only limitations being the capacity of it’s imagination. Thoreau compares his idea to the spider using it as an allegory to explain his ideas of life and his aspired to be a non-conformist. Only a non-conformist, with his own dreams and imagination, not deterred by society, can truly peruse life how he wants to live it. He idealizes the spider; its image of the world is purely its own. In Walden, Thoreau compares himself to the common spider; because, like the spider, his perception of the world is solely of his. He uses the spider to emphasize the point that it doesn’t matter who you are, your world is as big and as vast as your imagination.…
