It is probably a fair statement to say that Cam hails from a football centered family, as his dad had experience in the NFL, and his brother, Cecil Newton Jr., currently plays for the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL (Levin). He is originally from College Park, Georgia, and attended Westlake High School (Gene). While in high school, his exploits on the football field earned him a coveted five-star rating, which constitutes him as one of the top thirty high school football in the United States of America in 2007(Gene). He did not just wake up one day and become the Defensive player of the year by doing nothing, it took him days and days of practice and hard work to earn that title. The player is very dedicated and passionate about what he does, which are traits that very few people possess. On the field, you will never see him taking part in acts such as showboating or dancing after his team has made a game winning touchdown. His humble behavior is something that I try to model when I am playing basketball or football. I learned that it is not necessary to make the other team know how much you have excelled at your sport, if you are good then they will notice. There is no need to make someone else feel bad because they are not as gifted as you are in some areas of life, they may still be better than you at many other activities other than sports. Furthermore, I learned that if you are good at a sport, it is not entirely because of your skills that the team is…

Football season was around the corner and sign-up sheets were overdue. Simon was the only person left to hand his forms in. When Coach Billechek had come to confront him, he had told him that he was not going to pursue football anymore. “What do you mean you don’t want to play football anymore? In 1971 in Alexandria Virgina, at the desegregated T. C. Williams High School, African American head coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is hired to lead the school's football team. Coach Boone takes the coaching position from current head coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton), who has been nominated for the Virginia High School Hall of Fame, and who also later decides to move on to other coaching opportunities. In a show of respect, Boone offers an assistant coordinator coaching position to Yoast. Yoast at first refuses Boone's offer, but is then tempted to join after the white players pledge to boycott the team if he doesn't participate. Dismayed at the prospect of the students losing their chances at scholarships, Yoast changes his mind and takes up the position of defensive coordinator. The African American and white athletes of the football team frequently clash in racially motivated conflicts at their football camp, including those between captain Gerry Bertier (Ryan Hurst) and Julius Campbell (Wood Harris). However, after forceful coaxing and rigorous athletic training by Boone, the team achieves both racial harmony and triumph. After returning from football camp, Boone is told by a member of the school board that if he loses even a single game, he…

The animals are ready to burst out of their cages and breathe the fresh air of middle school grounds. Students frantically begin to hush their peers in order to be the first let out. In the jungle, there are always two or three monkeys that decide to create chaos. Among the others, mumbling could be heard about the upcoming games about to take place. Many already started to decide what teams and students would be taking over the field. In Wilson Southern Middle School, those monkeys at recess decided to play a rule-breaking game of shark and minnows. Along with this game, they played a back breaking lunch bag tag, and an awkward imaginary game. Recess does not only contain games, but it has a huge impact on the body and its health.…

    The Things Students Carry

Kontum high school quarterback Dylan Ross carried his football gear. Standard equipment for the day’s practice; it weighed about three pounds, he figured. Cleats. Gym shorts. Mouth-guard. His shoulder brace. The bag was a constant reminder of the feeling. The feeling of a crowd, of the game. Of his father’s proud smile from the bleachers. He would thumb through the contents of the bag during class sometimes, when no one was looking, just looking over the objects, making sure they were all there; none missing. He would sometimes unstrap the Velcro of his brace, refitting it over and over again. Changing it mere millimeters every time; getting the size perfect without it ever touching his arm. By the time he was through, the strap was the same length as it was when he had started. A small part of him knew this reality. A large part of him didn’t care. He spent the majority of his core classes in a daze, wishing he were on the field. Wishing he were with his team. His thoughts were full of plays, of routes, of whistle-blowing and coach-yelling.…

Bertier began his high school career at Hammond High School and joined the football team. He became a key player, soon becoming the backbone of the defence. As a sophomore, he was starting line-backer, a position for which he won many honours. However, he was only able to play three seasons, when Hammond H.S. was merged with two other Alexandria high schools to form T.C. Williams High School. The consolidation meant there were many new faces on the football team as well as on the coaching staff, which caused racial tension between team members. This new mixture of Titans was forced to come together as a single successful team, dealing with the issue of racial prejudice, a difficult battle for many members of the team. As a captain, Bertier, along with friend and teammate defensive end Julius Campbell, supported their teammates through this time of struggle. Even though the team was still struggling with prejudice as the season opener rolled around, the strife was not evident in the way the T.C. Titans began the 1971 season. The Titans went 13-0, including nine shut outs, and went on to win the Virginia State Championship during the Titans' undefeated…
