Sexual Orientation Discrimination in America
The political issue that I chose to address is Sexual Orientation Discrimination in America. I found an article in the University Library that captured the challenges that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered couples face with the new law that allows same sex couples to marry in certain states. The article titled “U.S. News: Firms Balk Gay Weddings --- Photographers, Bakers Face Legal Challenges After Rejecting Jobs On Religious Grounds” describes same sex couples being denied service on their wedding day based on religious beliefs. The argument being upheld by the business owners is that they should have the right to deny service to same sex couples if it violates their religious convictions. Before the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was ruled unconstitutional, the LGBT community also faced back lash from popular fast food chain restaurant Chick-fil-A. According to Business Insider, Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy stated: "We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that. ... We want to do anything we possibly can to strengthen families. We are very much committed to that," Cathy emphasized. "We intend to stay the course," he said. "We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles." (Bhasin, 2013) I think that by using the strategies for applying creativity to problems and issues I will be able to better address the ongoing discrimination that continues to live in America despite the changes that have been already made. If I am not mistaken, discrimination has been living in America for generations and is still invading the lives of heterosexuals as well.
