    Jay Z's autobiography

    • 393 Words

Throughout the memoir Jay Z almost translates his lyrics to some of his songs for the audience. He includes the popular song 99 problems. “If you're having girl problems I feel bad for you son / I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one” is the line and Jay Z explains it as “In this verse, the bitch is a female dog, the K-9 cop coming to sniff the ride. When I was living my version of this story, we got away – the K-9 unit was late, and the cop let me go. We were back on the road again, hearts pounding, crack still tucked untouched in the stash, when I saw the k-9 unite screaming up the high way going in the opposite direction” (61). He ties this into his past as a dealer which started when he was very young and how he knew that since most people had not gone through what he had, audiences would not understand what he meant by using the word “bitch.” Jay Z says that it is what seems to be the punch line, making it seem like the last word someone gets. He says that most rappers include this infamous line in their songs, “Their voices were big, like their beats, but naturally slick, like hustlers’. The rhymes were crisp and aggressive” (9). This hints to the notion of masculinity needing to be emphasized. He also mentions that he…

“Ready Or Not”, by the Fugees, is another example of a hip hop song that exposes the harsh realities of the ghettos, as it paints a vivid picture of the struggles they face. The song can get very dark and depressing, but sadly this is as a result of the fact that it is describing the life of impoverished, racialized minorities, attempting to survive in such an unfair and unjust world. The lyrics enlighten the listener and teach society that life is not always as easy and simple as it may seem. Things can get very complicated for particular individuals, especially those living in the ghettos. This song brings awareness concerning people living within such environments, in hopes that there will be further support towards social change.…

African American hip hop culture gained popularity in the decades following the Civil Rights movement that ended in the 1960s. In today’s society, we refer to the music of the 1970s and 1980s as “old school” hip-hop. These songs are notable for the simple rapping techniques used as well as lyrics that primarily focus on party-related subjects. The song titled “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five is an example of an old school hip hop song that strayed away from the typical party-related lyrics and focused on telling a story about life in the ghetto. This song ultimately changed the content and tone of hip hop forever by accurately proving Ralph Ellison’s three-step process as part of the blues music, portraying the harsh life in the hood, and ultimately becoming one of the most successful rap songs of all time.…

If you listen to almost any rap song especially from the big time platinum selling artists, basically their lyrics are going to be about one of two things…the money they have or about bitches and hoes. Besides the fact that with today’s many technological advancements that it’s hard to be successful in the music industry with the illegal downloading, leaking etc. If you want to make a name for yourself and maintain your fan base at the end of the day you have to sell records…Especially being a new artist you’re going to be judged heavily on how well your first single goes which ultimately determines how well your album will sale but all that’s based on if people feel your music and how well your image is put out to the public. So the dilemma comes when artist are faced with the question are you going with the norm? Or are you willing to branch out and jeopardize your career? Many times you see artist that are labeled “one hit wonders” that can’t produce another hit and then the only way to redeem themselves it to feature themselves with a more well-known artist to help boost their credentials. So instead of taking that chance and being different and not playing into “the dominant chorus of misogyny” (Mclune 297) they easily revert back to the common vernacular mandates that are in every song as somewhat of a safety net in order to be considered a “down, hip and mainstream artist”. As stated in the article those who decide not to join the…

The book Crazy like Us was written by Ethan Watters who has studied the trends in social psychology for the past twenty years. This book went into detail on how our ideas on psychology as a culture were pretty much forced upon the other areas of the world and as a result started a chain reaction of mental, and in some cases physical health issues. This book stressed how if we had taken the time to understand multicultural differences and there effects on psychology before we forced our cultures ideas on them we could have taken a different approach and it may have been helpful instead of being so detrimental.…

Often in rap music the artist is describing points of their life or childhood that were notable to them. One prominent rap song “Juicy”, by Notorious B.I.G. is “Biggie’s ode to growing up in the ghetto. Alternating between his impoverished childhood and life at the top of the charts, Big creates a rags-to-riches narrative exemplifying the American Dream lived through Hip Hop.” Another example is Tinie Tempah’s “Written in the stars”, which also references his life as an impoverished young boy living in the ghetto. The is is evident in lines such as “Look I'm just a writer from the ghetto like Malory Blackman. Where the hells all the sanity at, damn I used to be the kid that no one cared about. That's why you have to keep screaming 'til they hear you out”. There are an abundance of rap songs that delve deep into the origins of the writer, often of the hardships they faced due to poverty and bad influence in their youth. These include being exposed to gangs, and gang related violence as well as drugs and alcohol at a young age. These very real references to their youth are central illustrations of how music mirrors…

In verse two he uses rain as reference to his current situation. ‘You know it's funny when it rains it pours”(2pac). Meaning when bad things happen other more difficult situations seem to occur at the same time. Another figurative language that he uses are Idioms. He doesn't have that much , but he is trying to make it the best way he can. “I'm trying to make a dollar out of fifteen cent” (2pac). One of most interesting part of this song is when he talks about blaming his mother for turning his brother into a crack baby. “We ain't meant to survive , cause it's a setup” (2pac). Which goes in to explain that the government want the black community to…
