Crackdown on Teenage Pregnancy
Although teen pregnancy rates have gone done a lot, the numbers are still too high. Just because the numbers have gone down since previous years isn’t very accurate because the population has increased. Teens don’t know how much work it really takes. Being a parent glamorized by T.V. shows such as 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom. Having a child causes stress and if you aren’t ready for it, depression is often a result for birth mother and child. Extreme stress for the parent, risks of depression and countless challenges put on the child are all possible risks teen parents might face if they don’t take a required class before graduating high school. Being a parent at any age will cause stress. Being a teenage parent is even more stressful. Usually when someone brings a baby into this world they have all of the right resources, a stable income, a house, etc. As a teenager you probably don't have a well-paying job or a house to raise a child which puts even more stress in both parent and child. "Children of adolescent mothers are at high risk for adverse development.” Parenting stress and social support can impact outcomes experienced by adolescent parents and their children" (Cindy Y. Huang, Jessica Costeines, Joy S. Kaufman, Carmen Ayala 2). If the parents don’t have a stable house or much they wouldn’t be able to care for the child. Would you really want to put a young child into that position because the mother didn’t think about these things? Another outcome of having a child too young is depression. This can affect both mother and child. This doesn't put either in a good position. "Parents with higher parenting stress have also been found to have more negative parenting styles" (Cindy Y.
