Some countries can spend a great amount of money on their health care (such as the United States) but still might not have the best health care in the world. Others have special arrangements that new mothers and infants can go through to make sure that they start off their life in a good and healthy environment. In this paper I am going to compare and contrast the infant health care and the overall prenatal care in the United States and South Korea by referencing multiple articles and textbooks that focus on this subject. Both countries have various ways in which they handle their health system and the care of their newborns. taHeavy drinking by pregnant women can be devastating to offspring. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are a cluster of abnormalities and problems that appear in the offspring of mothers who drink alcohol heavily during pregnancy. The abnormalities include facial deformities and defective limbs, face, and heart (Klingenberg & others, 2010). Most children with FASD have learning problems and many are below average in intelligence with some that are mentally retarded (Dalen & others, 2009). Recent studies revealed that children and adults with FASD have impaired memory development (Coles & others, 2010; Pei & others, 2008). Another recent study found that children with FASD have impaired math ability linked to multiple regions of the brain (Lebel & others, 2010). Although many mothers of FASD infants are heavy drinkers, many mothers who are heavy drinkers do not have children with FASD or have one child with FASD and other children who do not have it.…

Many times, mothers have their pregnancies terminated by natural causes that could have been prevented if medical facilities were adequate, so this means that the developing child was also affected. In Congo 800,000 women are living with fistula, a disabling condition often caused by problems in childbirth; the number grows by 20,000 each year. Effects of why the mothers and child have bad conditions can include the fact that they have a food shortage and cannot feed their developing fetus, how poverty affects the income of each person and unhygienic/unsanitary things like water. According to Dr. De Bernis, he says, “Although it may not be their fault for the occurrence of poverty, it is some people's own individual responsibility for not having health insurance.” But, because of the lack of accessible health care with little to none hospitals, that provide proper health care, the number of diseases and bad health problems are affecting both the mothers and the young children. In conclusion, in poor African countries such as Congo and Uganda do not have the health care they need when women are pregnant, whether it is a disease from unhygienic water, or if it is from…
