Coursework on William Blake's "London"
The famous poem London by William Blake is widely considered to be a masterpiece by all enthusiasts of fine literature. In the poem, William Blake describes to us the situation of sorrow and despair that seems to envelope 18th century London. In the poem, William Blake is walking through a street near the river Thames and sees the people engulfed in misery and describes it as he sees it. He describes over and over again about how miserable the people are in a deeply sorrowful tone. By using the sorrowful tone, it makes it seem as though Blake wants the reader to understand and sympathize upon the situation of London during the 18th Century.
Despite London being a poem with a widely perceived deeper meaning, the structure is fairly basic. It is arranged in four quatrains much to the effect William Blake was trying to create. Each quatrain portrays a different aspect of misery in the city. ‘I wandered though each chartered street,’ the first quatrain, depicts William Blake walking through a street as he sees the fear and misery in the faces of everyone he meets, ‘A mark in every face I meet, Marks of weakness, marks of woe.’ In the second quatrain, the use of the ‘every’ expresses the widespread misery and woe of London. ‘In every cry of every man, in every infant’s cry of fear, in every voice, in every ban, the mind-forged manacles I hear.’ Blake uses the word ‘every’ to great effect as he is able to portray the universal depression that enveloped people at the time. The third and fourth quatrain further enforces the universal depression but this time more specific. William Blake uses examples from the real world to reinforce his point. ‘How the chimney-sweeper’s cry’ references the horrible conditions very young children had to brave. ‘And the hapless soldier’s sigh, runs in blood down the palace walls’ references the pointless violence that took place during the 18th century.

    But the question rises why London has been the centre for mystery in many of these gothic fictions. The answer lies in the mindset of an era clouded by construction, smoke and novelty – the Victorian era. London is even to date, a world within its own and during the Victorian era, London was a source of major construction and a source continuous development of certain areas and industries. New development and affluent buildings went hand in hand with the overcrowded slums of London where the worst living conditions possible manifested within themselves. The Golden age of steam and coal mining also spelled the beginning of pollution which in turn led to a number of social costs. Dehumanisation of work, child labour even at tender ages of 3 and four, to extreme pollution and disease were all costs of the industrial revolution that took over London in the late 19th century. Though the conditions worsened for some, and the middle class grew, the well-off including some in middle class society was ignorant of the suffering in the slums. Thus the London population was not of distinct class and these societal differences brought fourth fear of those of other classes. Another possible explanation for the fear of cities in the Victorian mind especially of London would be the dramatic increase in crime that took over the cities.     He mentioned alcohol in both poems, ‘And slops of beer, your coat with buttons off’ in ‘Five Bells’ and ‘the liquor green’ in ‘William Street’. This emphasis on alcohol is part of Australian culture and Australian living condition. ‘William Street’ is written during the Great Depression. There were economic difficulties, unemployment, poverty and homelessness, which are reflected on ‘William Street’. Death is also mentioned in both poems, Joe Lynch in ‘Five Bells’ who fell off the boat and died, and bad economic situation, which brought to alcoholism and causes death in ‘William Street’. The imagery quotation of the neon lights, ‘The red globes of light, the liquor green’ has double meanings in it. ‘The red globes’ symbolizes prostitution and ‘the liquor green’ symbolizes alcoholism. Personification is used in ‘The pulsing arrows and the running fire’ to emphasize that this place is actually living and active. Alcoholism and prostitution does not mean that William Street is ‘ugly’. Each stanza in the poem ends with the repetition of ‘You find this ugly, I find it lovely’, which has two contrast rhyming adjectives. He leaves up to the reader to make the judgment about the living condition in Kings Cross. Slessor uses human’s five senses in his imagery of this poem, such as the sense of smell in the third stanza, ‘Smells rich & gasping, smoke & fat & fish…’ The use of colloquial language in the fourth stanza, ‘The dips & molls’, which means alcoholics and prostitutes in Australian jargon, which is also telling the audience about Australian lifestyle. ‘William Street’ is about people’s different perspective of the urban Australian lifestyle and leads us to a better understanding of the human condition, through an apparent interpretation of the nature and attitudes towards everyday…
