Ordinary courage is a book that tells the story of an ordinary man who is inlisted in the continental army in the revolutionary war. Joseph Plumb Martin is the young man fighting in this war, at the time he entered he was just a mere 16 year old kid but by the time his time in the continental army was up he became a man. This is a first person memoir of what it was like for a regular person living in a war zone, and dealing with the everyday fears of food shortage, low morale, and danger of attack. This is something that many people in todays world could not handle because even some of the old guys in the military now can handle it. How many sixteen year olds can you say have the maturity to handle this kind of pressure, this book did not glorify the war the way others usually do, the book showed the way the war really was it was brutal and ugly. The revolutionary war was the birth of the nation the same way that Joseph Martin grew up it was really the birth of a man. He grew up alongside the United States. The author wants to show how it was for an average soldier to fight in that particular war, and he is successful in doing so. He wants to strip away any illusions that the reader might have of the nature of war. He writes that he does not want to paint himself as anything like a hero, for he does not see himself as a hero. He sees the war as a terrible experience with suffering and not heroism as the main feature, and the way the story was written you can tell that the war was not glorified. Martin believes in the princibles and ideals that the war was based on, but he was determined to show that the war that was supposed to bring those ideals to reality was actually a very dirty and bloody war.…

Erik Fisher previously slapped Tino Cruz, Luis’ younger brother, across the face. Luis Cruz purposefully enraged Erik for revenge for Tino by taunting, “You would smack a little kid in the face, right? Why don’t you come over here and try to smack me” (211)? Luis’ provocation caused Erik to order Arthur to whack a blackjack across Luis’ head. This caused the aneurysm (weakness in a blood vessel) in Luis’ head to further weaken and burst, causing a massive stroke, ultimately leading to Luis’ death. Once Luis died, Paul pondered, “The truth about Luis is obvious to all of the people around him… They know what really happened… Why would that seem so mysterious to me” (249)? While reflecting, Paul came across his reality. He was living in “bits and pieces of the truth” (249), while everyone else “know what really happened” (249). Paul’s reflection indicates that he has realized the truth, that he was living in lies while others were not. Luis’ decision to provoke Erik caused Paul to reflect and uncover the truth of his…

No one is born with courage, but rather born with the potential to be courageous. Courage is not always an act of great bravery, but can also be expressed in the most average day to day actions. But when death is staring into your eyes, only a handful of people can persevere through the hardships and challenges using the courage in their hearts. Courage is being scared to death...and saddling up anyway. Many composers portray courage in the presence of death, danger and fear and show that to be able to go beyond the boundaries of death, danger and fear one must show the courage to stare into the eyes of death itself. Roberto Benigni in his film 'Life is Beautiful' (1997), Sir Alfred Lord Tennyson in his poem 'Charge of the Light Brigade' (1854) and Andrew Stanton's 'Finding Nemo' (2003) all contain characters who display tremendous amount of courage and be able to stand up against life risking situations. In these texts, composers have implemented techniques to show that courage is fumed by the feelings of determination, love and to save a life.…

    Patient and courage

At first glance, it might seem that patience and courage are dispositions that tend in different directions, reflecting different strengths. If we are asked to imagine exemplars of each of these virtues, we probably call two very different individuals to mind—the courageous person imposing, heroic, probably male, and the patient person quiet, reserved, quite likely female. (After all, Ancient Greek courage simply was the virtue of manliness (andreia), and the Victorians used to name their daughters Patience.) Some of our images of courage may even positively conflict with some of our images of patience, with the courageous person insisting upon action while the patient person implores him to wait.…
