Latina/o immigrant youth is projected to make up one third of more than 100 million U.S. children by 2050 (Census Bureau, 2014). It also appears that many Latina/o immigrant youth are expected to face unique challenges that will affect their well-being and mental health (Potochnick & Perreira, 2010). To express that with the expected increase of Latina/o population, society need to gain a better comprehension about this population, provide better service that will guide the future Latina/o youth generation and above all nurture them with the essential life skills to thrive in America. For many decades, researchers and practitioners concerned about cultural issues in counseling have worked to identify factors that both hinder and promote treatment in cross-racial counseling contexts (Kim, Ng, & Ahn, 2005; Ponterotto, Fuertes, & Chen, 2000; Zane et al., 2005). Although some attention has been paid to multicultural counseling treatment outcomes with clients of color generally (e.g., Constantine, 2002), comparatively fewer studies have examined the processes associated with the treatment outcomes of specific groups of clients of color (e.g., Li…

What is school violence? Many describe school violence as any form of violence projected on an individual within school premises. Within the decade’s school violence has become more and more common in our society and has even lead to mass shootings. Most shooters are seen as outcasts by their peers and feel excluded. Becoming a culturally competent counselor is an ongoing process; it is vital that professionals strive to become culturally competent as it would help the counseling process and therapeutic relationship. In order to learn more about other ethnic/racial groups that are different from my own I would need to become more involved in the community, read educational literature about ethnic/racial groups, and engage directly with other ethnic/racial groups. For instance, during times when I travel to other states, I should take advantage of that opportunity and explore ethnic and culture groups. An example of this would be my trip to Pennsylvania, during that vacation, I spend time with people that are Amish. Often times there are activities and…

The population of Latinos in the U.S. continues to increase. In 2014, Latinos accounted for 17.4% of the population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2015). Many Latinos are dealing with mental health disorders, such as depression. To help the well-beings of Latinos, counselors need to understand treatments based on depression. Additionally, one has to understand the cultural factors within the population of Latinos. Recently, Kanter et al. (2015) depicts a need for more research in order to improve treatment outcomes for Latinos dealing with depression (p. 178). Another study demonstrates the necessities to decrease observed disparities in care experienced by Latino community (Gonzales, Hurtado de Mendoza, Kaltman, & Serrano, 2014, p. 83). In addition,…

First, ethical issue that involves multicultural and diversity is that the counselor needs to be precautious when providing a psychological assessment and test to the client. The counselor needs to make sure it is appropriate and it will not affect the client in any way. According to American Counseling Associated Code of Ethics states E.8, “Multicultural Issues/ Diversity in Assessment Counselors select and use with caution assessment techniques normed on populations other than that of the client. Counselors recognize the effects of age, color, culture, disability, ethnic group, gender, race, language preference, religion, spirituality, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status on test administration and interpretation, and they place test results in proper perspective with other relevant factors”. Therefore, before conducting a psychological assessment or test the counselor should make sure the test and assessment will do no harm to the client due to their own beliefs.…
