Costuming In Matcheneid

In the poster for Matched, Director Fucci uses the background of a road spliting in two, the costuming of the two men and the diction “heart or society’s path” to show the world to be a place where when one has to choose between people they love, they learn to ignore social norms and choose to follow their heart despite society's opinion. The book Matched is about a girl named Cassia who lives in a society where people get matched to a lover when they are 16. Cassia accidently lands with two matches, one is a boy named Xander who is wealthy and popular and one is a boy named Ky who is poor and not socially accepted. Cassia spends months getting to know Ky and falls in love with him, but the society officials find out and she’s forced to make the choice between following her heart or following what the society
The dark lighting over “societies path” displays that Cassia choosing to follow the path society has laid out, and marrying Xander would not be the best option and would have a negative consequence. The costuming shown in this picture is also purposeful. One of the men, Ky is pictured wearing dirty and cheap looking clothing and the other man, Xander is shown wearing put together and valuable clothes. The costuming on the two men represent the difference between one's heart’s choice and societies choice. The man in the suit and wealthy looking clothes represent societies perfect choice because he is nice looking and appears to be socially high class. On the other side of the road, the man in the sweat suit is displaying the idea of the heart’s choice. This man is dressed less high class and that represents that he is not what society would choose, he is the lesser option that the women’s heart wants. The costuming, lighting differences, and the background choice that Director Fucci uses all contribute to the message that when humans are forced to choose between two they love, they discover that they must ignore social norms and choose what their heart
