Costa Rica Soccer

Adventures, Experiences, and mistakes; all crucial things that shape and mold our lives. From thrilling zip lining to relaxing hot springs all of us were always together. Costa Rica was definitely a memory that will never be forgotten. Together as team we all bonded so well with not only each other but also the coaching staff, trainer, yourself, and the parents. It was a bit of a drag during the trip traveling three to four hours as well as waking up at eight every morning. Looking back at it now we really accomplished more things than the ordinary person would on a vacation/ soccer tour. Not only did we play a series of games but also we traveled to some of the most beautiful historical places of the country. The trip was in a way split up into two sections. The first week we played two games and were on the coast of the country. The next week we traveled more inland to a more tropical and beautiful view where we played two more games, one of those being against a very popular team in Costa Rica. Everyday we grew further and further away from segregation. Its not that no one likes each other it is just for the most part the same people usually hangout with the same people, which is pretty normal. But as time went on things began to mesh and there would be different people hanging out with different people. They announced our rooming pairs as we sat in the coach’s office the night of the flight. “Christian, Bryce, Leon”, Krumpe said, “Oh shit”, I thought to my self. Christian was never going to shut up the whole trip about how he hooked up with this girl and that girl. Bryce just looked at me and shook his head with similar thoughts going through his head. We then grabbed our luggage and took off to the airport for our red eye flight to El Salvador. During our layover before going to Guanacaste, Costa Rica, we all took the opportunity of getting some rest and sleeping till then.
Our first stop was at the Flamingo Beach Resort in Guanacaste,

The rich cultural and the many amazing traits that Costa Rica had in store for us, was only a symbol of the cultural and traits that fall within our team. It seems hard to believe that a country like Costa Rica and a small college soccer team can have so much in common, but along the trip I realized that in a lot of ways, we are the same. Reading the “Ticos” book could only teach each of us so much about Costa Rica and the Ticos that live there because it only mentioned “on the surface” facts that were pretty straight forward; It wasn’t until the trip, when we were able to delve into the culture itself and really understand what the book was saying. Costa Rica didn’t just…

There is absolutely nothing better than spending a week on vacation with your friends. Last summer, I went to the Free Lutheran Youth (FLY) convention. FLY is a large get-together where Lutheran teenagers from around the country meet and worship. Abby Ator, Lance Bengochea, Sierra Machart, Mariah Machart, Emma Pederson, Bryan Pederson and I go to Bethel Lutheran Church; we decided to fundraise and attend the FLY convention. This year was the first time I have participated; the experience literally changed my outlook on life. The week I spent in Estes Park, Colorado, brought me closer to ten people who I never imagined would become my close friends.…

The Dominican Republic, known for its beautiful beaches and balmy weather, was the last place I ever imagined I would find myself in this past summer vacation. On this week long trip, it wasn't for the warm ocean waves or the traditional Dominican cuisine I was called to, I was called to serve the beautiful Dominican people. On the third day of the trip, instead of heading out to the worksite where we had been pouring the concrete footers of a plastics and water filter factory, I opted to travel with a group to the childrens' cancer ward in Santiago and visit the patients. We started out our visit by performing a few dances we had taught our vacation bible school and handing out fun little gift we had brought with us. We played ball with some…

During the summer program I met many different people from various places. One person that I met who I became good friends with was Isabella. Isabella is a high school student going into her junior year. She’s from Boston, Massachusetts and lives with her mom, dad, and older brother. Her dad moved to the United States when he was younger from Argentina, and her mom was born in Italy and also moved to Boston when she was younger. The class she took in the summer program was creative writing: journalism and nonfiction. Isabella and I both have parents that weren’t born in the United States. My parents were both born in Albania, making me first generation just like Isabella is. During the spring season, Isabella and I both play softball. We agree…

People ask me why I care so much. They tell me it’s just a game, get over it. But soccer has never been just a game to me. Soccer has been consuming my time, thoughts, and body since my parents signed me up for small-time recreational soccer twelve years ago that developed into extremely competitive travel soccer. They, perhaps unknowingly, threw me headlong into a life of traveling countless miles, long nights of practice, and an unforgettable amount of tears, sweat, and bloodshed. All which persisted over the course of my extensive soccer career.…

The setting I choose to do my ethnography assignment on was to observe an indoor soccer game in Yuba City. The arena where this indoor soccer game took place was named Champions Arena Indoor Soccer. This was not the first time I have been to this arena so I did have some background about the place before observing. One of my close friends was participating in the game so I figured it was a great idea to come support him and do my assignment. Although, I had been to this arena before and seen many soccer games before I have never played on an actual soccer team before. For the majority of my life, I played baseball. So for this assignment I wanted to observe the subculture of soccer and try to see if I can see similarities to the baseball environment.…

Together we were the three amigos. This made sense for the both of them, one being from Panama and the other from Brazil, making me the wildcard. Now looking back at our friendship they both treated me as if I was family, not the outsider I thought I was. I knew our friendship was of great significance when my Brazilian friend (Thomas) brought me a Brazilian bandana for me to wear during Hispanic Heritage Month. As for my other amigo, Anwar would often lend me his football video games, which I found strange. It wasn’t just this new found friendliness I received that was strange, but the fact that they called soccer football. Growing up there was only one football and it was watched every Sunday during the 16-week season. My family always grills out on Sunday hours before kickoff, often times snacking on chips and dip. The Spanish football (soccer) was a much different experience, as I usually found an empanada winding up in my hands with Anwar always insisting for me to have just one more to eat. Just like that I was being accepted into another new…

The children at the orphanage run by Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH), meaning Our Little Brothers and Sisters in English, were the most caring people I’ve met. I had the chance to develop intimate relationships with them on a mission trip to Honduras with my church. I left the country for two weeks over the summer preceding my sophomore year. Going in, I was a little nervous, having only taken one year of Spanish during my freshman year of high school, but during the trip I developed a passion for learning the language along with a love of the culture of my Honduran brothers and sisters.…

Soccer, is a sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. At the turn of the 21st century, the game was played by over 250 million players in over 200 countries, making it the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field of grass, with a goal in the middle of each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the opposing goal.In a game, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms, while the field players typically use their feet to kick the ball into position, occasionally using their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition. The Laws of The Game were originally codified in England by the Football association in 1863 and have evolved since then. Association football is governed internationally byFIFA, which organises the FIFA worldcup every four years.…
