In order to answer if the cost per outcome calculations is valuable to a human service agency you must first understand what cost per outcome is, and in lay-mans terms it is what the total cost of all the programs of a particular agency. So, in answering why is valuable the answer to that is simple because an agency must know the cost to show whether or not the program is meeting the objectives and goals while providing the service for the agency and supporting the mission statement. It helps to maintain the stability of the agency financially and keep it moving forward knowing you are maintaining the status that is expected of a human service agency.
The next question asks what happens if they do not maintain any records and that answer again is foolish yet simple. A place of business that does not show whether they are doing any good in any service is just asking for trouble, and by that I mean you will not know if you are doing what is expected of you. In the case of food stamps can be the example of this by saying you give people a certain amount of money for food, but do not keep track of how much you are giving to the people and you were supposed to be able to help 1000 families. If you track your costs you will know whether you are doing any good, but if you just give money away you will run out before you are able to help the amount you are supposed to.

Cost per output and cost per outcome calculations valuable to human service agencies, because resources are limited, human service agencies need to make the best cost per output and cost per outcome. Human service agencies are usually not-for-profit and perform social service for the benefit of society. Hence value for money is important so that public funds/donations get their real worth -or the Human Service agencies would be wasting money and then the public will stop donating. Cost per outcome and cost per output tells their overhead for services. Human service agencies are going to need donations to cover these costs. Outputs and outcomes provide the information about the services, how they are implemented, and whether or not they are financially sound to the organization. Divisions of labor, services, and programming can be determined in order to ensure funds are allocated properly. Determinations can be made taking into account fixed and variable costs and how those affect the revenues. Quality of services can also be addressed using outputs and outcomes which determine the level of services and how the quality is affected through an increase in funding or a cutback. Our Healthcare system is clearly business based according to the article “Cost Conundrum” and on the movie “Escape Fire”. In the movie it had an impacting story of an older lady who had heart problems where she went to a doctor and they were going to charge her thousands of dollars were later she went to a different doctor and they charged her a couple hundred dollars for t he same procedure. I couldn’t believe that in a different office she would get the same procedure done for a lot cheaper than in the other doctor’s office. I was really happy to see that later the soldier who was overdosing on medications decided to stop and later tried a different form of medication of acupuncture. Our healthcare system is not like it was many years ago, our healthcare system is market based and doctors don’t focus on quality care on their patients and rather view them as dollar signs.
