Cosmetologist Personal Statement
The fall of my junior year, I began attending a career technical high school in order earn my cosmetologist license. While I originally decided to attend so I could have a stable, well paying job while in college, I soon discovered another path.
I have always had a fascination with science from a young age. Once I reached high school and I had the chance to explore different facets of the subject, I quickly became infatuated with chemistry. What I enjoyed most was the labs, that simply allowed me to learn about chemical reactions and changes while creating something new, using an array of elements and compounds.
The following year, as I began attending cosmetology school, my passion for chemistry fell to the wayside for a while. Later in the school year, I attended Wella cosmetology education class that once again peaked my interest in the physical science. During the class, met with a cosmetologist that worked alongside a chemist to formulate and produce Wella’s new product line. Cosmetic science combines fields such as chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmaceutical chemistry in a focus on product formulation, manufacturing, and marketing. I desire to work and focus my studies in product development and formulation. In addition to working for a major cosmetic company a personal goal of mine is to branch out and eventually develop my own line of cruelty free hair care products, to be sold in professional

After reading Peter Cappelli article “Why focusing too Narrowly in College Could Backfire” I started to think about my own educational goals and why I chose to be a hairstylist. When I graduated from high school I attend beauty college, at that time the beauty industry was booming. There was a salon on every corner. There was always walk- ins and new clients available for stylist. Now with the social media craze like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, the African American salon business has fallen because social media outlets. These outlets, teach ordinary people how to do their own hair, and caused stylist to lose clients. We also have the natural hair movement, that took clients that would normally come into the salon for hair weaves and relaxers, and are now wearing their hair in its natural state and don’t need the salon anymore. Another major down fall to African American salon industry was manufacturing companies like L’Oréal and Shea moisture that promotes salon quality products on YouTube for the naturalista. These were a few major changes that happen in…

    Why Cosmetology

Firstly, my choice to be a Cosmetologist has been an on-going interest of mine since I was about four years old. At that time , when I was four years old, I was in the bath at my Aunt Rhoda’s backwoods farm house. She had heard a gunshot , so she went to check where the gun shot had come from. When doing so , she had left her razor for shaving her legs on the bathtub shelf. I grabbed it, being the curious child I was, and shaved off my eye brow. Another reason I chose to be a Cosmetologist is because when I was about 7 years old my parents bought me tons of Barbie dolls to play with and ruin. One day when we were at Toys ‘R’ Us I saw a huge Barbie doll head without a body that you could do her hair. So as most kids my age , I begged them to buy it for me., but they ended up buying me two of them one for Christmas and one for my birthday. After I got the dolls I played with them almost every day and attempted to braid their hair. I also washed their hair when I was in the bath tub. That is one reason why I chose to be in Cosmetology at ICTC.…
