The La Cosa Nostra is an Italian word which means “This thing of ours”. It’s the American version of the Sicilian Mafia. A family or Familglia is a unit of Cosa Nostra that is comprised of ‘made men’ from 20 to 300 persons, supervised by a Boss. To gain importance in family, one needs to be the strongest earner. The more one excels as an enforcer and shows enthusiasm in work, the importance goes up. A good enforcer’s future is bright and lined with plenty of mistresses. La Cosa Nostra, or the LCN as it is known by the FBI, consists of different “families” or groups that are generally arranged geographically and engaged in significant and organized racketeering activity. The LCN is most active in the New York metropolitan area, parts of New Jersey, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, and New England. It has members in other major cities and is involved in international crimes.
Here is a glimpse into reality: La Cosa Nostra is governed by 10 laws or “commandments”. All members must abide by them.
No one can present himself directly to another of their friends. There must be a third person to do it.
Always being available for Cosa Nostra is a duty- even if their wives are about to give birth.
Never look at the wives of friends.
Wives must be treated with respect.
Never be seen with cops.
Appointments must absolutely be respected.
Money cannot be appropriated if it belongs to others or to other families.
Don’t go to pubs and clubs.
When asked for any information, the answer must be the truth.

A gang is defined as a group of people who want to control some places in the cities. Every group has a leader, who gives his people any tasks. The group's activities are usually criminal or pose a threat to the community. However, they don't usually see themselves as the real threat but rather as a group that works to improve their community. They wear specific colored clothing, jewelry, make certain hand signals, use certain graffiti, and specific jargon. It's usually assumed that gangs are composed of only males who have most likely dropped out of school and are unemployed. Louis Rodriguez is the author of "La Vida Loca: Two Generations of Gang Members", and he writes about his and his son's gangbanging experiences.…

The gang I decided to do research on was the Mexican Mafia. The gang originated in the California Department of Corrections in the late 1950’s, and is considered to be one of the oldest and most powerful gangs in the entire United States. Gang members can often be identified by having the number thirteen tattooed on their bodies somewhere or by having something resembling the number. The reason behind using the number thirteen is because it marks the 13th letter of the alphabet, the letter M. The gang is well known for the worst crimes that can be committed while in Prison. Those crimes include extortion, drug trafficking, and murder. The largest population of this gang seems to reside in California and Texas while the gang is responsible for…

One of the most popular theories with organized crime is the alien conspiracy theory. This theory blames outsiders and their influences for the prevalence of organized crime in U.S. society. Over the years, images of well dressed immigrants with machine guns who live by the code of silence have becoem associated with this theory (Lyman & Potter, 2007, Chapter 1). This theory states that the mafia was born and gained prominence during the 1860s in Sicily, and that those immigrants have since become responsible for the foundations of U.S. organized crime. There are about twenty-five Italian crime families known as…

The upbringing of the organization has two facets: create a better environment by helping those in need and the other one is to seize opportunities to gain an advantage over others by strategic force. “The idea of the Mafia is a Robin Hood-like organization in defense of the poor had a long life in Italy. But the sheer brutality of the war against the state puts the validity of the myth in question. There was so much violence and Mafia brutality. That is when the myth of the good Mafia dies. It enters into a period of crisis”(The Star). “Has there ever been a trial during which it has emerged that there is a criminal association called the mafia and that this association has been definitely responsible for or actually committed a crime? Has any document or witness any proof at all which has ever come to light establishing a sure connection between a crime and the so-called mafia? In the absence of such proof, and if we admit that the mafia exists, I’d say it was a secret association for mutual aid, no more and no less than freemasonry. There’s the same amount of proof that the freemasons go in for criminal activity as there is that the mafia exists”(Sciascia…

Everyone has heard of the notorious Al Capone. Gang leader from Chicago who is responsible for many murders. What some may not know is that he was also a part of a much larger organization known as The Mafia. Defined by Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary as a “secret criminal society” the Mafia controls all organized crime in a particular area. They knew how to get what they wanted without getting caught and were not afraid of anything or anyone. Although the Mafia is still around today their prime years were from the 1920’s to the 1970’s. Beginning in the late 19th century organized crime rose in popularity among American people. The Mafia and its following depended on family ties, secrecy, and loyalty as they participated…

Organized crime has been viewed as activities that are related to violence, drugs, prostitution other illegal activities that are intertwined with corruption that can at times involve participation of political and criminal justice parties. It is usually structured in a hierarchical format carrying the head boss on top and his captains, lieutenants and soldiers at the bottom. Organized crimes eventually become like a family setting whose family members are privately selected based on a host of different references. Ethnicity, religion, willingness to listen and follow orders, personal family history and even qualifications based on criminal and monetary influences, are but a few of the references that the members should offer.…

I define organized crime as a single criminal organization made up of criminals of Italian descent that breaks a political or moral principle.
