Nigeria is considered to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Many different forms of corruption are familiar to Nigeria including political corruption, bureaucratic corruption, electoral corruption, embezzlement, and bribery. Corruption has even been said to be a viable enterprise in Nigeria due to the involvement of citizens, government officials, and private corporations alike. Two main factors help explain why corruption and bribery are so high in Nigeria, these factors include Nigeria’s complete dependence on the petroleum industry and profit-focused companies taking advantage of a less developed, vulnerable country’s government and social systems.…

    Nigerian Scamming

Many Americans have very limited knowledge of Nigeria. People tend to know little regarding the country’s history or its current affairs, and hold the nation to a common image. This image of Nigeria can generally be narrowed down to poverty, corruption, and the scamming that is operated out of the country. While Nigeria is worthy of much more than a three-word summary, there are reasons why the country has earned this reputation. Poverty, corruption, and scamming occur in every country, but Nigeria’s extensive history regarding these topics has led them to being singled-out by many people in the international community. Nigeria is no stranger to scamming and the “sort of misuse of official iconography”, which is often used in the infamous Nigerian scams (Engber). According to a New York Times report, “When Nigeria was established as a colony under British rule in 1914, its first governor cracked down on scammers in fake uniforms who claimed to be collecting taxes on behalf of the empire” (Engber). This example from many years ago foreshadowed the extensive scamming culture that would come to exist in Nigeria over half of a century later. Over time, lack of law enforcement, widespread poverty, and severe corruption have fostered a community in which scamming’s occurrence is almost inevitable.…

Finance, in general terms, is the raising of required fund. Finance is the function of raising fund and then properly managing the collected fund. Nickel, et. al. (2005) further stated that finance is a function in business (private/public) that acquires funds for the organisation and manages those funds within the organisation, these activities include preparing of budgets; doing cash flow analysis; and planning for the expenditure of funds’ assets. In the Nigerian state, the totality the manipulation, exploration, control and handling of the fiscal allocations and its generation is referred to as public finance management. Generally, in the Nigerian state and the Nigerian situation which is widely acknowledged to be thoroughly corrupt, there a great mismanagement and misappropriation of public funds as the leaders and politicians in office loot public funds, manipulate public expenditure and budget in their favour and for personal gains leaving the masses distraught, unemployed, poor and cheated. Due to the growing gap between the rich and poor in Nigeria as a result of mismanagement of public funds it has led to the increase in crime rate and low standard of living which is accustomed by economic under-development.…

At first Obi is as critical as Achebe of bribery. He refuses to take bribes and also finds it necessary for himself to be a "pioneer" in Nigeria, bringing down corruption in government and instigating change. It seems that corruption runs rampant and that everyone in Nigeria from the "white man" to the Umuofian Progressive Union participates in "seeing" people about what they need done. Men offer money, and women offer their bodies, in return for favors and services. Obi believes that by not taking brwhile at the university in London, a paper in which he theorized on what would change the corruption of high positions in Nigeria. He believed that the "old Africans" at the top of civil service positions would have to be replaced by a younger generation of idealistic and educated university graduates, such as himself.…

As rightly collated by Decalo1, the events in Africa took scholars by surprise, since most doubted Africa could move towards democracy. Even in the mid-1980 's, one argued that by reason of their poverty or the violence of their politics, African states were unlikely to move in a democratic direction.2 Another adding that "to have expected democracy to flourish would have been historical blindness"3, since 'outside the core (industrialized states) democracy is a rarity, support for Tilly 's thesis 'why Europe will not occur again - with a few exceptions, the limits of democratic development in the world may well have been reached4.…
