Corporal Punishment
Research local cases of corporal punishment or reported cases of abuse by teachers within your community or state and discuss your findings. Sadly Nevada ranks # 1 in the nation for child abuse according from Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention. This brings me to tell you that there are several cases in the state of Nevada against schoolteachers and civil cases against the school district that are pending. The Clark County School District has now been named in a civil lawsuit alleging that administrators failed to remove an abusive teacher even after those who witnessed it first-hand in the classroom officially reported the abuse. The criminal case against former Clark County special ED teacher Mamie Hubbard-Washington is already scheduled to go to trial this summer -- she faces five felony counts of child abuse. The abuse accorded to kids who suffer from autism. Five kids suffered corporal punishment by this teacher for a period of a year. Kids would go home with bruises and signs of abuse. It wasn’t until the grandmother of one of the kids took the child to her pediatrician and the doctor informed her to report it to the police. The law also requires the pediatrician to report the abuse. My question is why did it take a year to report? http://www.8newsnow.com/story/7134296/shocking-case-of-alleged-child-abuse-by-las-vegas-teacher What factors led to the juvenile and teacher acting in the manner they did? These five kids have autism and need more attention and patience than other kids. This teacher was not qualified to teach these kids. She would grab their arms causing bruises, chocking, yelling, making them eat when they didn’t want to, and forced them to spit up the food. Each teacher needs to have a high standard of learning and teaching. Especially when teaching kids with special needs. This teacher disregarded her professional and moral values when she continued teaching these kids without having the capacity to do so. Each year I read more cases of child abuse, especially with kids that have a special disability. Kids with special disabilities are susceptible to abuse. The sings are visible, emotional and physical, just have to look and communicate. Develop a plan of action to help both the student and educator to remediate such behaviors and create a classroom that provides for both the needs of the student and educator. The first thing is respect. The teacher needs to go into the classroom with respect, professionalism, knowledge of the class studies and love. Teach each child the subjects and learn in a group atmosphere. Teach children that the teacher is there to teach them, and have an open door policy for what ever else they want to talk about. Kids learn effectively when the subject is fun and challenging. But also, like at home, boundaries need to be set up. Everybody needs to know what is expected of them and consequences will be in place if the rules are broken. With love and patience each child can learn and discover new abilities.

How can these changes be beneficial to both the educational and justice systems? The Clark county school system is been sued civilly for not investigating the accusations of abuse, and they should be held liable. I don’t understand this concept because in nursing, if a person is accused of abuse, the person is suspended pending investigation. If after three days the allegations are false, the person comes back to work and those lost wages are compensated. Why isn’t this practice used with people that work with children? They are just as burnable as the elderly. The educational system and judicial system will loose money that could have been implemented in beneficial areas that benefit education. http://www.8newsnow.com/story/7134296/shocking-case-of-alleged-child-abuse-by-las-vegas-teacher

Observing these videos have made me realize the responsibilities of a teacher. There is so much that is to be taken into consideration in making everything fair for the students. Many students have needs that require attention to learn appropriately. As a teacher, it is important to be creative and to make sure all the students are learning reasonably. One thing that I would emulate would be in Case #664. I would make sure my instruction addresses different cultural backgrounds. I think it was amazing how the language arts teacher spoke about the different Historic people who were African-American. I am sure she addressed other cultural backgrounds as well. From Case #243, I would avoid having a special needs teacher in my classroom for only a little while. If I had many exceptional learners in my class, I would want an inclusive classroom. This allows the special needs teacher to always be there to support the students. That would make it easier on me as the regular classroom teacher as well. A classroom environment I would love to teach in would be an environment where everything is planned and organized. When things are unorganized, it makes teaching harder. Having everything laid out will make the day go by smoother. My students will be okay with diversity in my classroom. There is no such thing as one person being better than the other. Everyone has a flaw or something they may not be good at. Discrimination will not be an option in my classroom. No one should be…

Although this case does not directly apply to those with disabilities, it did help set a precedent with regards to the treatment of individuals in a school setting. As future teachers, we are required by law to treat all children with the same dignity and respect. That would also include those with mental or physical disabilities that may be in the school system. Not only is it required, but in order to have a positive classroom, we must put aside our own prejudices to help all of our students to be productive members of society. We also have to make sure that the children in our classrooms show each other respect.…

We are formally complaining that Ms Sanchez, through her actions, attitude, ethics, etc, exhibits a lack of respect and/or knowledge of the principles called for in creating a strong climate of positive relationships critical to creating a positive school climate. Throughout this entire affair, Ms Sanchez has exhibited an attitude of superiority, curtness, defensiveness, unwillingness, etc. From our first talks with her over this incident she has been unwilling to listen to anything we might have to say, or do, let alone discuss matters. The best example of this is when we initially asked, 4 days after the incident, why expulsion when there were less severe responses that could be applied, she flatly said: "it's assault, he's expelled." We…

He was very positive with them but had a lack of rules and boundaries for the students. I felt the students took advantage of this and used it to their advantage. When a student had given a wrong answer all students would call this student out and let them know there mistake. The teacher did nothing to stop the students and let the verbal bashing continue. While this continued he continued on with his questioning I believe to bypass the issue and stay on topic or to just ignore the issue still not sure…

In week four of our class I conducted an interview with a couple of teachers from my area (central Florida) which asked me to remain anonymous for technical reasons. I called them subject (A) and subject (B). In that interview they both opened up to me and took me through a journey of the school system in my area. One of the teachers has been teaching in this area for about 38 years and from what information I had gathered from the interview I can definitely say that she has seen it all. Teaching was her passion since her early age, she recalls playing teacher with her grandmother and aunts trying to teach them proper English since they only spoke broken English. Her family migrated to Florida from Greece when she was 6 years old and she did not speak a word of English when she started school. She recalls being so shy and since she didn’t speak any English, all she did was sitting in a corner and color all day. Up to this day she says she owes everything to her fourth grade teacher Mrs. Prim. At first (A) thought that Mrs. Prim was the meanest person in the whole world for taking away her coloring papers and crayons and forcing her in a way to learn English. (A) Admitted to me that she hated Mrs. Prim for doing that to her, but once she started learning the English language she had a change of heart. The rest as they say is history. (B) on the other hand has only been teaching for about 5 years and she loves it. She’s an E.S.L. instructor and her day consists of teaching English to kids that English is a second language. She says that she wants to helps others as someone helped her mother learn the English language many years ago and helped her…

There were no African Americans, and few Hispanics. Each child seemed relatively the same social status, and there was a very close ratio of girls to boys. With the classroom having a pretty close to equal amount of girls to boys in it, I think it balanced out the rowdy 1st grade boys to the calmer 1st grade girls. Though, I did not like the way she handled disciplining a child that acted out. Mrs. Collier has a disciplinary system that focuses on ramifications and rewards. She has a point system that can earn them rewards, but if they are bad she takes their points away and it can cause them to get a note written home to their parents about their behavior. Mrs. Collier would make a point to call the student out and embarrass them. At one point during their reading time, we were reading a book that had the theme of kids learning their lesson from their actions. She specifically called out one little girl in front of the whole class and pointed out a time when she messed up. Mrs. Collier told the whole class what her punishment was and said, “That’s why you should never do that class”. I thought it was very inappropriate, rude and embarrassing for the kids. It made me realize that I would never handle a situation like that when I become a…

    A. According to Katherine Nelson, Director of Community Relations for Desoto County Schools, in an article in the Desoto time’s tribune, she said, “Corporal punishment is part of how the system keeps its students on track and learning. It is a deterrent to discourage or prevent negative behavior. It keeps the schools in order and lets our teachers have an orderly classroom, which is a benefit to all the students’ ability to learn. Our goal is for the students to learn, but when they disrupt the classroom or misbehave in a punishable manner, there has to be a consequence.” Without corporal punishment I feel like kids wouldn’t care about the consequences of their actions and misconduct would be more frequent.…
