Cornelia Painting To Her Children Analysis

The Cornelia painting to her children as her treasures by Angelica Kauffman was painted in the early neoclassical period. In this painting you can see the simplicity of colors and the symmetry that gives away the fact of it being a neoclassical painting. The lady in red is showing off her jewelry to Cornelia, and asked her about her treasures. Cornelia is shown signaling at her children and calling them as her treasures. The painting shows the love and confidence a mother has in her children. The color schemes is also something that caught my attention; Cornelia is in white that is the color of purity, while the lady is in red that is the color of passion it shows her love and passion towards the materialistic things like the jewelry. In my artwork, I created a batik landscape of Ireland, with the house on the cliff supposed to be a house similar to one on my way to church. When creating this piece, I used a piece of silk, and then dyed it with various colors, ranging from brown to green. I believe this shows the theme, as I have been to Ireland, and I have multiple connections to it, as many ancestors of mine were Irish. Also, the house in the artwork was one that I see every time I go to church. I felt the house had an older and more traditional look to it, as it was covered with dead plants, and slightly broken in. The focus of this paper will be “Ingenue” by Richard Judson Zolan and “The Gold Dress” by Bill Brauer. The focal point of both paintings is a beautiful woman and this is where the similarities stop. Zolan’s focus is completely within the boundaries of the painting while Brauer’s leads your eye off the plane insinuating there is more going on than is captured within the boundaries of the painting. The word ingenue refers to a naive, innocent young woman while the woman in “The Gold Dress” is definitely more provocatively situated. Both artists are Americans, Zolan from Chicago and Brauer from New York. Zolan studied under Louis Rittman, a personal friend and student of Claude Monet, the French impressionist, and Brauer under Frederico Castellon, a Spanish-American painter and illustrator of children’s books. Zolan’s style reflects the influence of Monet with the effects of light while Brauer is more sensual and moody, using deep intense colors and beautifully rendered curves.
