How can RIM use their Blackberry Brand Dominance to gain consumer market share?
Facts relating to problem
"Research In Motion (RIM) is a leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of innovative wireless solutions for the worldwide mobile communications market" according to RIM’s Corporate Profile. The Blackberry user appeal comes largely from the professional "prosumers" and business markets and it has been slow to capture the consumer market. Competition includes Samsung, Palm, HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, and Sony as well as the popular Apple iPhone. In North America, the iPhone has successfully targeted the consumer market and the younger demographic with catchy advertisement campaigns and applications designed for everyone.
RIM has had accelerated growth in the International Market capturing the consumer and business users who appreciated one central device for email, calendar, and phone applications. Not as dominant in the European Market, the iPhone is behind other fierce competitors in Europe and Asia whose technically savvy phones and coverage has outpaced Apple. While it is not possibly to quantify most of RIM’s operational goals we can try to establish what they may entail. A recent interview with new CEO Thorsten Heins points towards having their operative goals built around having an innovative culture that involves employees and develops them and having a top 3 market share globally in the mobile market [ (BlackBerry, 2012) ]. Furthermore, they are also very focused on reducing their costs which is demonstrated by their announcement of a core optimization program and CORE on June 16, 2011. These programs were meant to analyze the companies’ procedures and cut out overhead and redundancy [ (Research In Motion, 2011) ]. RIM’s competitors have been highly publicized and are listed by Yahoo Finance to be Nokia, Google, and Apple [ (Yahoo! Inc., 2012) ]. With RIM being in the mobile market, their consumer base is very broad selling to the general market. With such an advanced device the list of suppliers is vast as they need to provide all the parts from glass to processing chips and these suppliers are…

Research In Motion (RIM), a global leader in wireless innovation, revolutionized the mobile industry with the introduction of the BlackBerry® solution in 1999. There are multiple examples of the challenges RIM faced to protect its Intellectual Property as well as how those challenges were handled. One such example is RIM vs Glenayre Technologies, Inc. This claim, a response to an earlier suit brought forth by Glenayre, insisted that Glenayre blatantly imitated BlackBerry technology and marketing. Later in 2001, Glenayre's initial 1999 patent suit against RIM was dismissed. In early 2002 RIM and Glenayre agreed to drop their remaining lawsuits and work together to develop a wireless e-mail device that would incorporate Glenayre's messaging software. During this same time, RIM also obtained a U.S. patent called the BlackBerry Single Mailbox Integration patent, which covered technology that gave users the ability to have a single e-mail address on both wireless and desktop systems (http://www.answers.com/topic/research-in-motion-ltd-usa). The patent applied to the system and method that RIM pioneered for redirecting information between a host computer system and a mobile communications device.…

I believe that blackberry needs to take a longer view that will eventually help the developing nations in the Middle East and Asia increase the freedom their citizens have. Until than they should strongly cater to those entities that will benefit the most from high security, Corporations and Governments. At this time, the blackberry Phones are not very popular anywhere in the world and their market share of mobile devices is decreased to the point that they hold less than 1% of the market in the United States. However, our top government officials still use BlackBerry phones because of the strong encryption keys. (Based on my personal experience at work). Strategically Blackberry need to use the NSA debacle as a selling point along with other personal information leaks to push new BlackBerry products into the market.…

A particular reason of the sales declining is BlackBerry cannot satisfy enough to the market and product demand for customers. Sales declining imply to revenues declining. BlackBerry recognized most phone’s revenue is from the older models, which means the new phones are not much attract to customers. Ian Austen (2013) noted that BlackBerry could soon be leaving the business of making phones—leaving fewer options for a vocal minority still committed to phones with its once popular physical keyboard. (para. 1) BlackBerry usually produces the keyboard models, but with people’s pursuit on phone, most smartphone users prefer to use touch-screen models instead of the physical keyboards. Keyboard was one of a special characteristic of BlackBerry, eventually, that become an obstacle for its evolution.…

Despite the effects of ongoing poor economic conditions in the U.S., Apple Inc. celebrated record revenues and sales of computers. The company’s newly released iPad tablet computer and iPhone smartphone models helped push Apple to the #2 U.S. market share ranking for smartphones (trailing #1 Samsung, running Google’s Android OS.) However, Google’s expansion of the Android operating system had allowed competitors such as HTC, LG, Nokia, and Samsung to introduce smartphones, along with a new Windows Mobile operating system that copied many features of the iPhone. Google was also a growing threat to Apple in the tablet market, since many computer manufacturers were developing new tablet computers similar to the iPad that would run the Android operating system; increasing the stakes in the battle for the mobile device market that continues today (Thompson, A., Peteraf, M., Gamble, J., & Strickland, A. (2011).…
