The International Classification of Diseases-9 (ICD-9) is being expanded from 17,000 to about 141,000 codes. That is a significant increase in codes that we will have to learn. ICD is used in clinical care and research to define diseases and study disease patterns, as well as manage health care, monitor outcomes and allot resources. The new system will provide greater coding accuracy and specificity (Hazelwood, 2012). The ICD-9 system was over 20 years old and desperately needed to be redone. There have been many changes since then including new diseases which need a diagnosis and a code to go along with it. The new coding system allows for the provider to pick from a broad range of diagnosis codes. It also provides better information for non-acute care or nonhospital encounters, clinical decision making, and outcomes research.
