Convenience Store Analysis
[Scene: Three boys are sitting at a parking lot in front of a convenience store. Each boy seems to be in their teens and wearing clothing that seems to cover up their bodies well. It seems to be reasonably late at night as it is dark and there are no other people around. It also has seemed to rain a bit so the pavement shines bright despite being so dark, as if it was black coffee. The only reasonable light source seems to be coming from the supermarket as it is resonating a dozen yards behind.]

Boy 1: “So what’s your choice?”

Boy 2: “I never said I wasn’t going to do it. I just said wait a few minutes.”

Boy 1: “Fuck you mean wait a few minutes? We can only be here so long. People’ll get suspicious.”

Boy 3 takes something out of the front

[Scene: Inside the convenience store it is very quiet. The only clerk, a girl who doesn’t seem to be much older than the boys, is standing and hunched over the counter reading something on her tablet. The entire grocery store seems to be well organized and spotless giving the indication that it has been a slow shift.]

The three boys enter the convenience store without so much as glancing at the clerk. They begin browsing the store as they take various products of shelves such as chips, soda, and alcohol. Things seem random but they really aren’t. Each boy is scouting the area inspecting the surroundings. Despite their tough persona it is clear they are inexperienced. They take too long scouting an obvious small store and act too conspicuous. While walking through the store Boy 3 opens up a small bag of potato chips and begins eating. The clerk looks up from her tablet and shakes her head in disapproval. She then goes back focusing on her tablet. Boy 1 then turns his head toward Boy 2, they seem to have a moment of understanding. Boy 1 then walks toward the counter toward the clerk with his hands in the pouch of his

It is still very dark to the point that it is difficult to make out their faces. Few lights are on in the houses as it is the middle of the night. There is little activity going on throughout the neighborhood. The only signs of life are coming from the delinquent trio as they proudly gloat about their recent accomplishment.]

Boy 1: “I can’t be ya’ll dumbass motherfuckers wanted to walk on the side of the road.”

Boy 3: “Well we wouldn’t be lost…”

Boy 1: “But we’d be in fucking cuffs right now. I don’t know what ya’ll do if I wasn’t here.”

Boy 3: “Shit I’d be fine. I would take all the money from that bitch myself. I’d put my gun in her mouth and scare the shit outta her.”

Boy 2 laughs.

Boy 1: “Man you stupid, shut up.”

Boy 2: “I don’t recall you being so confident Trevor. You didn’t bother taking your gun out until it was almost over.”

Trevor: “I was just waiting for the right time.”

Both Boys 1 and 2 begin laughing

Boy 1: “You waited ’til she was already handing me the money, how the fucks that the ‘right time’?”

Trevor: “Because it was.”

Boy 1: “You so stupid.”

Boy 2 then briefly stops as he becomes eccentric and points ahead.

Boy 2: “Hey there’s the lake!” d and is

The most clear way this is done is through the repeated use of situational irony. There is clear irony that the teenage boy would arrive in the night, obviously to preserve secrecy from the girl’s parents, for it only to turn out that the parents are aware he's there but also taking part in eating the skittles that the boy throws. Irony is also evident in the actions of the police officer, robber, and the whole family in the house. The common reaction of a family to a robber in their house is fear, not stopping to eat Skittles and the same could be said about a robber's reaction to a…

Although one’s good deeds may often not be acknowledged, the inevitable lesson of maturity can be taught through such experiences. In “A&P”, Sammy is a teenage clerk who is not acknowledged for accomplishing what he thinks is a good deed. During a hot day, three teenage girls walks into the A&P grocery store, wearing only their bathing suits. The image of the girl’s revealing attire provides an absolute contrast to both the simple interior of the store and also of the other conservative customers. Sammy describes the customers as “sheeps” because they look mindless as they follow each other around the aisles in continual, constant motion. However, these three girls conflict with the imagery of “sheeps” by breaking the norms of what the A&P grocery store, and society in general, has proclaimed as acceptable. These three girls symbolize the reverse of what Sammy has been accustomed to seeing in the store, which are the pedestrian and conformed customers. Infrequency rather than frequency triggers the events that occur in the A&P…
